Universe: A Buffyverse Apocalypse
Word Count: 573

"God, this is boring."

"What is?" Lindsey asked, looking up at his oldest brother while Kate concentrated on the chessboard and her next move. The instant she noticed he wasn't paying attention, she moved her king over one space so it was more protected. When he looked back down, he scratched his head, knowing that something was different, but not certain what.

Connor, who was flopped down all over one of the couches, shook his book. "Skilling. Most boring thing ever. Why do I need to know how to fix a car, anyway? Our car never breaks. It literally can't." He nudged Richard, who was sitting next to him. "Besides, you like this stuff, don't you? If something actually does break, I can just get you to come fix it."

Richard shrugged. "I just like knowing as much as possible. Books are good for that."

Robin, who was sprawled on the floor, shook his head and held up his book as though putting it in a new position might actually reveal something new. Then he let it drop onto his chest. "Yeah, but there's just so many of the damned things. Sometimes it feels like all we do is go to school and study, and maybe gaze at the stars for a while at night. It's the same thing, day after day, with very little fun."

Connor nodded. "I get that it's necessary for careers and lifts and all that, but it's boring as hell." He tossed his book to the side and picked up the remote. "If we have to skill, let's at least do it the semi-fun way."

Everyone's attention was immediately drawn to the TV, where a chef had set himself on fire and was screaming his head off.

"See?" Connor said. "Skilling should be more interesting."

Richard shook his head. "You want to get set on fire?"

"Well no, not really. But something interesting would be a nice break from the day-to-day."

Kate rolled her eyes at her brothers. Lindsey took advantage of her distraction to move his queen into a better position to take Kate's bishop. "Life will get more interesting when we're older. And if you skill now, you won't have to so much in college, and you can do what you want then," she pointed out. "Besides, it's not like those cooking shows are real. They put the food in and poof! It's ready after a commercial break. Nothing is that fast." Her brothers eyed each other and she huffed. "Just because I'm the youngest doesn't mean I'm stupid."

"Nope, not stupid at all," Lindsey said with an innocent smile.

Kate eyed him suspiciously, then looked at the chess board. "You moved something. What'd you move?"

"Who says I moved something?"

"You totally moved something while I was talking! ...I just don't know what yet."

The three older boys paid little attention to their siblings squabbling - it wasn't exactly anything new. Connor sighed again as he watched the chef (who was still on fire) run around like a chicken with its head cut off. "Life would be so much more interesting if it were like TV."

"TV is life with the dull bits cut out," Richard pointed out. "Kate's right. Everything on these shows is fake. Though I have to admit, that dude is hilarious."

"Yeah," Robin said, as he rolled over onto his stomach and propped his face on his arms. "Isn't that something?"
