This entire story began a long, long time ago. Anis' only good memory of her father was when he was clasping a rose choker around her neck. The words that followed were ominous; "You must never take this off, or something bad will happen." And, for the longest time, she truly couldn't. Anis went through a rebellious stage in which she would honestly try to remove the choker, but it was unbreakable - not to mention every time she tried, something bad happened to her. Finally she just had to accept it, but that didn't keep her out of trouble. In fact, people seemed to dislike her because of it and she was often chased by the Disciplinary Teacher or called out by the local gangs for it. While this was entertaining to the crowd that watched, Anis just felt burdened by it and the attention that came with it.
On one particularly rough day (everybody was just on a track to run her over, weren't they?) Anis happened to have clean-up duties with a classmate, Kaede Higa. While arguing with him she spotted something falling from the sky, and before she knew it a small bat-like thing came crashing into her face. In a matter of seconds she'd found a beautiful red card, but lost her collar choker. Certain that the little black creature had taken it, she gave chase and wound up in the Library - and down a hole! When she was able to regain her bearings, Anis realized things could only get worse as she was now face to face with a giant dragon. Luckily (maybe?), her teacher Itsushi was also there and looking badly beaten up. Following his orders, Anis came upon her fate as the next Dominion.
Kissing the red card brought forth a Rhode Knight, one of four, and a person she recognized - Kaede. Kaede was unwilling to fight at first, but with a shouted order he had to do as told and the two beat the dragon, later finding out that it was in fact the little creature that had smacked into her earlier, Ninufa (a baby dragon?). Trying to make sense of everything, Anis was soon greeted by three cards to accompany the first - White, Black, and Blue. Kissing each (Ninufa kicked them into her face) called the remaining knights: Mitsuru Tenjoh - the student body president, Mutsuki Kurama - resident mysterious student, and Seiran Asagi - the quiet first year.
According to Itsushi, the Knights and their Dominion were to resurrect the Devil himself, but the scholar following this theory miscalculated the time period and thus the idea of it was written off. But there was something much more important than Itsushi trying to explain the Rhode Knights. The search for her choker was under way, for "papa" would surely find out otherwise! As she got to know the Rhode Knights, Anis began to learn that these boys were nothing like she had imagined. In fact, the Black Rose, Mutsuki, wasn't even human! Mitsuru was, unfortunately, not her dream guy as she had originally thought (and was actually a little weird), and Seiran was - somehow - allergic to roses! Despite the several obstacles that stood in their path, all of which were fellow students jealous of her sudden closeness with these boys, she slowly grew comfortable with them and put her trust in them as her Knights.
Unfortunately, things would not remain so simple. Haruto Kisugi, a friend from the past, had chosen the perfect timing to enroll into her school and, by chance, her class as well. Although she had wanted to spend her free time looking for her choker with her new friends, Haruto was quick to demand her time to himself, immediately causing a bit of trouble between himself and the Rhode Knights. Thus, a duel was announced! Accepted by the Blue Rose and performed by the Red. However, two of three rounds were quickly lost and, with only the race left, it looked to be that Haruto would win the weekend with Anis. Unexpectedly, Haruto chose to cheat this round, giving Kaede an expired drink and thus promising his own achievement. With Seiran's help, Kaede quickly recovered and completed the race, victorious. While consoling Haruto, Anis discovered that he was a little different than she remembered, as he called her out on her lost choker.
As it turned out, Haruto was in fact the Yellow Rose. This was a surprise to Anis, because she had been under the impression that there were only the four roses. What's more, Haruto was hunting down her Knights and severely wounded Kaede after his attack on Mutsuki. During school, Haruto acted as if nothing were going on, but Anis remained worried for the safety of her Knights. Later on, she learned about the betrayal of the Yellow Rose of the past, of the jealousy and pain, and of the Blue Rhode Knight. Seiran himself, the Blue Rose, was a lab created homunculus made to sacrifice himself to the Devil's Seal when the time came in order to keep the Devil caged within. Everything about him, the past Kaede thought they shared, was a lie and for a moment neither Kaede nor Anis knew how to react. This on top of her fathers sudden appearance and Seiran's kidnapping by Haruto made everything that much more difficult to swallow, but finally Anis came to the decision that Seiran was still Seiran and nothing would stand in the way of her and her friends.
With the remaining Rhode Knights (and her real choker returned to her previously by the Blue Rose), Anis completed the True Contracts and moved on to face Haruto, convincing him that they had no reason to fight. But for Seiran, they were too late. Apparently he had already escaped prior to their arrival, so Anis had to hurry back to the Devils Seal to stop him from sacrificing himself. She arrived just as the Seal was about to take Seiran, and it was Kaede that helped to bring him back from it, however just as things seemed to be going well the Devils Seal reached out, grabbing Anis and pulling her toward its darkness. When it seemed certain that Anis would be made the next sacrifice, Haruto appeared by using his magic and took her place, pushing her back to the others while the Seal dragged him in.
Feeling down about losing Haruto, a quick pep talk from Kaede was just what Anis needed to get back into the swing of things. Now, with the Blue Rose returned to them, Anis could complete the True Contract with her Knights. Finalizing the Contracts bought them time with the Devils Seal, tying it into a state of suspended animation, but to fully restore the Seal Anis would have to find the Arcana Cards, pieces of the broken seal or the crystallized remnants of the original Dominion's power. Easy enough, and she was determined to do this (otherwise she would have to get to the final stage with one of the Knights - "Blood Marriage"!).
As usual, though, things could only get worse.
This was truly a punishment, as out of nowhere her own father, Schwartz Yamamoto, was appointed as her schools substitute school nurse and a mandatory physical exam was right on their heels. When confronting him about his reasons for being there, Anis found out that Haruto had survived all thanks to Schwartz saving him before the Seal could take him. It was a relief, but this did not change her opinion of her father in the slightest. Still suspicious, the most she could gather was that he was there to find out about the Rhode Knights and to get closer to the Devils Seal. Considering him her enemy, Anis had to do whatever she could to stand in his way.
First things first, she had to impersonate a Health Committee Member. At least, that way, she could keep a close eye on her less than normal (read: Mutsuki) Knights. Everything was going as smoothly as it could go, but there was one small hitch. An attack from an unseen enemy left them questioning who they should be on the lookout for (and who was one of her fathers lackeys), but it was the last they saw of their foe for now. In the meantime, they had to keep an eye out for the Arcana Cards in order to repair and close the Devils Seal. But things can never stay calm enough to make it easy; after the physical exam, the pop idols of Rhodecia enrolled into their school - one a little too friendly for Anis' tastes. Something good did happen to come from the Idol Students, though. A possible Arcana Card appeared as a reward to one of their idol group auditions, the Second Place award to be specific, and Anis was determined to win it.
Finally they got a break, and after a scuffle with the Rhodecia stars, now known as the Orange and Lime Roses, the Rhode Knights had their first Arcana Card. While this was all well and good, the Black Rose had been acting more and more distant and Anis began to worry. During a class project, Anis met the quiet girl - Hiiragi Mikage, a sweet girl by the looks of things with some advice that Anis immediately took to. However, her attempts to cheer up Mutsuki were only partly successful and she ran off from the undesired situation. It was her luck to happen across the Rhodecia roses now, but they were beat up and worn. Left with more questions than answers, Anis returned to Mikage to learn that the quiet girl with glasses wanted to go on a date with Kaede! Surprised (that anyone would want to date him), Anis agreed to ask him out for her but instead sprung the surprise!date on him after summoning him to Gothic Land.
Using her worry that Kaede would screw up the date as an excuse, Anis and the remaining Knights stayed at the amusement park to keep an eye on Kaede. Meanwhile, the puzzles surrounding Mutsuki were only getting worse but before she had time to worry about it a new enemy attacked. Her first Awakening was complete with the White Rose, and after claiming another Arcana Card they met the Domina Galacta -- a Fake Dominion with Fake Roses of her own, and apparently her goal was to get Anis.
Her latest concern still being with the Black Rose finally began to shed some light on itself, and fed up with her curiosity Anis and the remaining Rhode Knights infiltrated Mitsuru's mansion. While there were few clues on the whereabouts of Mutsuki, they did find some rather unfavorable things - just more quirks of the White Rose's they wish they hadn't found. Fortunately (in a way) for Anis, she eventually found Mitsuru and he helped her to discover the secret past of Mutsuki, how he became the Black Rhode Knight and his relations with the Gray Rose, his brother. In the end, Anis managed to perform the first Awakening with the Black Rose and gain another Arcana card, even if it was a "gift" from the opposing Dominion.
