- its really sunny today
Jack held tightly to her hand. People were pushing at them from all directions and he feared he would lose her in the crowd. He wondered if she read his mind because he felt her reach out with her other hand and grasp his forearm. He drew his arm in towards his body, pulling her closer to him. She rested her head against his back and he closed his eyes for a moment, enjoying the feeling of her against him.
They were almost there. Soon the gates would open and they would be free of this bottleneck and out in the open air. He smiled, thinking through his plans. First, he would get her a hat. It was sunny and hot and he didn’t want her to have to squint all day. He needed a hat, too. His had been lost long ago. He ducked his head a little and giggled at the idea of them with matching hats.
“What’s so funny, Jack?”
He could hear the smile in her voice.
“You’ll find out”, he teased.
His smile widened when he felt her swat his arm.
“I hope your surprise involves food, Jack. I’m starving!”
Oh, it did. He would get her a hot dog and some cracker jacks and whatever else she wanted. But he had to have a hot dog. There was nothing like having one here.
Loud clanging brought him back to the present. The gates were finally opening. As the people around them pushed and shoved forward, she clung to his arm, unwilling to let anyone separate them. After they had made it through the entrance, he gently pulled her off to the side.
He leaned over and kissed her forehead, letting his fingers run over her soft hair. He pulled away reluctantly, but reached for her hand, unwilling to lose contact with her all together. He intertwined his fingers with hers and tugged.
“C’mon. We need to go this way.”
He walked past several stands until he found the one he wanted.
“Jack - “
His childlike grin made her stop in her tracks.
“It’s really sunny today. Trust me, you’ll need it.”
He turned around to face the lady behind the counter and pointed towards one of the shelves.
“I’ll take two, please.”
“Ah, goin’ old school, huh?”
“Yep,” he said smiling.
He paid for the hats and turned back around.
“Here you go.” He gently placed one of the hats on her head.
“Perfect.”
She grinned up at him, laughing slightly. He put his own hat on his head and raised an eyebrow at her.
“What do you think?”
She placed her hands on his arms and looked up at him. She smiled before kissing him softly on the lips.
“Thank you for my hat, Jack.”
He reached for her, cupping the side of her face with his hand and caressing her cheek with his thumb. He leaned down and kissed her, tasting the oranges and syrup from their breakfast.
“You’re welcome.” His voice was soft and low and he felt her shudder slightly.
He reached for her hand again.
“C’mon, let’s get some food. I’m starving, too.”
They found the shortest line at the food counter and it wasn’t long before they were carrying hot dogs, two sodas, and a large bag of cracker jacks.
“Is this our section?”
“Yep, this is it. Row 12. Should be the two seats on the end.”
Amazingly, they made it without spilling anything and settled into their seats. He had just taken a big bite of his hot dog when -
“Oh, Jack!”
“Wha - “
“I forgot to get a program! Don’t worry, I’ll be right back!”
She shoved her food tray onto his lap and attempted to climb over his long legs.
“…are… fl…”, he garbled, attempting to swallow his hot dog while trying to prevent their food from ending up all over his shorts.
Her bare thigh brushed against the inside of his knee and the sensation running through him, nearly made him let all the cracker jacks spill on to the row in front of them.
She blushed. “Sorry, Jack.”
“Hurry,” his voice was deep and low. She blushed deeper and hurried up the aisle.
He stared after her, watching her long blond ponytail bobbing up and down against her back.
“Hurry, Juliet,” he whispered.
