They've got shorter, I think for diminished attention spans. And more geared to TV/movie/toy tie-ins. It's been going on for awhile. When B&B were growing up, I'd buy them new copies of my favorite Little Golden Books from the 1950s, and they'd be missing whole chunks, sometimes entire stories.

I think they've made children's stories too tame nowadays. I'm not that old, but I can already see the differences. For example, everybody now knows The Little Mermaid as the Disney version, not the sad, beautiful Hans Christian Anderson original. I bet most kids don't even know there was an original story and that it's different. In fact, a lot of Hans Christian Anderson's stories have just been brushed aside, and they were some of my favorite stories growing up. I can understand taming the Brothers Grimm, as I still get kinda squicked out by the stuff they have in there, but the whole point of the stories is missed if you change it to have a happy ending. I think people underestimate how much our kids can understand without the "happily-ever-after" coating.

Where in the world did you get that lovely rare steak?

And: They're obviously more multiracial, and not in a bad way. Where we see artificial inclusion of various ethnic groups or names, the kids who grow up reading those stories will simply see those types of appearances and names as commonplace and completely normal.

And I'd love to see your pictures and help you decide. :-}
