It was a bit of a surprise when Jack made the suggestion to go outside, and more of a surprise when he'd offered to come along, but-- it was a pleasant surprise. Jack's suggestion made sense, really. Outside of staring directly into the water or at the windows, there really weren't any reflective surfaces to have to deal with. No spectres of the dead miming speech that kept getting easier to read. Just the wind, and the surf, and Jack

"I figured I'd let you handle 'em," he joked, turning to flash a grin towards Reeve, "you bein' the big leader o' Gaia an' all." He'd abandoned his shoes back in his room, not wanting to have to deal with abandoning them somewhere on the beach or carrying them while they walked. He dug his toes in the sand and shoved his hands in his pockets almost shyly, unsure if this was still a good idea. "Besides, you found the place, didn't ya?"
He walked backwards, keeping Reeve in his sight, taking a deep breath of the air. It did smell like a storm was coming, and Jack couldn't help but feel a thrill of excitement at that. Maybe he'd get lucky and it'd be a thunder-and-lightning one. "Got a place ya wanna go?" he asked, nearly tripping once before catching himself. Christ, he wasn't used to walking on sand, not especially backwards. "There's plenty here we ain't found yet."
"Doors don't care much whether you're a leader or not." For a moment he laughed, fine wrinkles crinkling up around his eyes. "They won't get any softer just because I'm a leader."
The smile grew softer; Jack looked as unsure as Reeve felt, which helped a bit. At least there didn't seem to be any preconceived expectations of what he was supposed to do. That would have made this whole thing near-impossible. "I hadn't really thought about it," Reeve mused, unable to stifle a laugh when Jack tripped. His eyes darted to the sky; it was darkening, but not so rapidly as to be an immediate threat. When was the last time he'd been caught out in a rainstorm and not been in imminent danger? College? Maybe a touch of rain wouldn't hurt him now

"I meant ya could probably handle them yerself, didn't need no newsie t'help ya," Jack explained, smiling as Reeve laughed. It was too rare that he heard the sound, and he enjoyed it every time.
"An' fer yer infermation, Reeve, I don' get lost," he retorted, picking a random direction and forging ahead. Honestly, he had no idea where he was going, but he figured anywhere that lead them away from the looming asylum had to be at least halfway decent. Besides, there was plenty he'd only just heard about but not yet seen; it stood to reason there was a hell of a lot more he hadn't even heard of. Maybe they'd have a baseball field or something out back. "Come on, let's try this way."
Reeve laughed again, shaking his head. "So if you don't get lost, what do you call it when you wind up somewhere you didn't intend to go?"
Still, he was happy enough to let Jack lead the way. Every place outside of the very front was new to him. In a way, the unknown was welcome. Roaming around the outside barefoot, like two naughty children trespassing on someone's property-- it held a certain appeal. They weren't too likely to be caught, or to get into trouble, but-- and this made him pause for a split second-- he didn't even know what kind of animals could be roaming on this island.
As exciting as a walk might have been, Reeve wasn't sure he was up for fighting off imps or guard beasts or whatever could be out there. But at the same time, Jack wasn't concerned in the least, and neither had anyone else....
"So, Jack." Reeve stuffed his hands in his pockets, strolling along beside him. "Do you have any idea what kinds of creatures live here? Because I don't."
