Last winter we painted son's room. I bought fabric for curtains and yarn to make a floor mat. I've posted a little picspam, but here are some pics of the finished project:
First of all, the paint job. We went to Lowe's and looked at several cards. The one my son chose had a regular paint/metal effect. First we painted with a color I think was called Morning Mist but sounded so girly that I renamed it Dawn's Early Light. Then the guy who works for my dad's contracting business who helps us out painted over it with a platinum-colored overcoat and then took a brush and swirled through that in half circles. The final effect was a little like brushed stainless steel. We left the plain paint on the window and door trim.
The window treatment of choice was this nifty fabric I found that is reminiscent of a Risk game board. Pretty nice for a teenaged boy whose walls could be said to be reminiscent of the ocean.
Finally, the floor mat. I bought these nifty plastic sheets that had grid markings on them and laid one over the fabric to make myself a pattern to crochet:
