To Quote or Not to Quote...

A while back I was speaking with a friend who writes, but not really with professional aspirations (which is still good. I don’t care what your goals are for writing if you love it!). She asked if I planned to add quotes to my book. At first I wasn’t sure what she meant. I thought she meant like a foreword or like some song lyrics at the beginning ( Read more... )

For what it's worth, I don't ever bother reading the quotes at the starts of chapters either, for basically the same reasons. I tend to skip over poetry and song lyrics added to fanfics as well. I may be missing something profound, but I just find it distracting.

I know, I have to say I'd rather get right to the story.

Interesting question and reminds me of the question of adding music to play on cue when reading something on kindle. While people have different tastes, I think for the most part the theme music on Scrubs is very powerful and sometimes I do hear a scene with music behind it ( ... )

Thst sounds interesting. I might have to give that book a looksee. I don't know if I'd want music to play on que. Sometimes music distracts me if it's programed with the story. If it's in the background like on the radio, then I can leave it in the background. I know sometimes when I go to webpagres or LJ pages and they have music linked, I always find myself hunting down the pause buttion or whatever will shut it up before I can read the page. LOL.

I HATE webpages with music! I usually have my own on or have multiple pages at once.

I'm not sure about books... it would work for an audio book I think because you are anticipating that it'll be audio. But for a regular book... I think it might be jarring because you're just reading along and suddenly music comes out!
