Writing Prompts

So, super agent Daphne Unfeasible (aka KT Literary) issued a holiday writing prompt on her fantastic blog yesterday. I’m not usually one who can do writing prompts because it kinda feels like an assignment/homework, and if you know me you know I HATED homework! So, I didn’t really think I’d do this, but one of the prompts stood out to me, and I ( Read more... )

Nice, tons of personality! I tend to avoid prompts too...I know any writing is going to help me out but I feel like writing something totally unrelated to my goals isn't quite as useful as doing writing experiments with characters and plotlines I'm already working with ^_~

I thought for sure you would have beta'd this, since betaing is in your blood-lol. I'm with you on writing prompts. Whenever I read about authors doing anthologies or colabs with other authors to do a short story, I always envy that some because I never thought I would want to write on command. Now, I know that I can if it's something that sparks something in me.

haha, yeah sometimes I think I should get myself a job as an editor ;)

I tend to think of prompts as throwaway writing...useful to learn with, but no need to polish it if you're not planning to use it anywhere else

Well, I know this exercise has changed the way I look at prompts. It's always good to be able to pull out something on demand. Because what would happened if one day I ran out of ideas...I would hate for my career (when I get one) to end after 5 books or something like that. So if I can take a prompt and have a whole story spring from it (which is what happened with this one, I now know Eric's story as well as Marianne's) then I won't need to fear running out of ideas. Now, I'm thinking of expanding this story...who knows, maybe I'll make it a book-lol.
