More specifically, has anyone ever used a sewing machine to do buttonholes? I have, but not on my new one and not for years and I have a rather weird question.
Okie, here goes. I have a little presser foot for buttonholes. I recall from my old machine you set it for the size you wanted, and it sewed up one side, over, then down the other side, and over without ANY prompting from you. My machine says is is an "automatic" buttonhole foot and the pictures show the machine doing just that, but it doesn't. It just sews on and on in one direction. I went to Jo-Ann Fabric and found there was a lever I was supposed to put down in the back to have it stop when it got to the right size, but when it does, the fabric just moves under the presser foot and keeps going in a straight line. It isn't slippery fabric either, just garden-variety cotton. Am I missing some doohicky or step?
Er... I've sewed buttonholes with a machine before, but not automatic ones... at least not in a long time. All mine would do one stitch, then I'd turn to a slightly different setting to do the tack on the ends, then another to do the second side, then back to the middle to do the tack at the top. I think your question is going to be machine specific. It may very well be that you'll have to pause sewing and turn the fabric, depending, or switch settings like on mine. I'm sorry I'm not more help.
