To me,being engaged for several years is sort of the next level of commitment. It's like, instead of just speculating about it, you're committed to going through with it. Plus, it gives you time to get used to the idea of what a serious commitment marriage is, and plan out how it will fit into your life. Being engaged gives you free license to discuss things like marriage, that are quasi-taboo and not altogether serious beforehand. I just see it as a natural next step. Besides, there are statistics showing that a longer engagement contributes to a better marriage.

YaY for happy breaks. And you do know that David and Andrew have both been engaged or nearly so for quite some time, right? And it isn't a definite that he'll ask me then, just that he's thinking about it. And yes, it is partially for the title, but it is also because we love each other a whole lot. ^_^
