The patients at the new group home you're working at are a lot like the patient population I work with. I know how mentally exhausting that kind of work can be (physically too, if you have to restrain)so I give you mad props for being able to put in that many hours there in a short period of time.
It's been pretty rough looking for work, and the movie theater was only giving me one or two shifts a week since the movie business collapsed in June, so I have pretty much decided to grab all the hours I can get until I find a full-time job.
But, yeah, it's not easy. I still have the same issues I had that kept me from working with that population in the past, they really don't progress, it demands a lot more from you emotionally than working with "troubled teens" and...well, let's be honest, I am not a big fan of giving people showers, baths and wiping behinds.
Still, no one is calling me a racist mother fucker when I walk in the door, I don't have to worry about one of the residents assaulting anyone or getting busted for drugs while at work so...
How have you been? Last I heard you'd had a little boy.
"I am not a big fan of giving people showers, baths and wiping behinds" lol, this is pretty much exactly what I ended up doing. They really ought to rename rehab therapists. Except we have a lot of violent patients so we're showering them and wiping their behinds whilst trying to avoid a fist in the face. I have been well, thanks. Evyn turns two on Monday, I can't believe how times goes so much faster the older I get. I hope you don't mind my commenting on your journal, I wasn't sure if you would be or not. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you on the job hunt. My fiance is still having major issues with finding an actual job as well. University degrees don't mean much these days unfortunately.
I don't even KNOW what I'm called at the group home, so I don't care what the title is. The residents at the OTHER cottage are violent, but I haven't worked with the violent ones...more the childlike ones. I played cowboys with one of the residents for about two hours last time I worked there while the staff who normally work there had to restrain a violent resident who'd injured a staff.
Ick.
And 2....wow...I count The Boy's years from age 2 to around 12 as "lost years"...all I remember is work, his and work...so those years are going to end up being a blur. The best advice I have is TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES!!!
I don't think anything means much for finding a job lately. It's the worst job market I've ever seen, and I've expanded the kind of jobs I'm looking for to just about everything. I wish him luck.
As for commenting, it's nice to hear from you and hear you're do8ing well. I hope that you keep doing so and that things work out wonderfully for you!
