I watched The Following on Hulu. [I have thoughts...]I have thoughts. And misgivings. It's an extremely well crafted bit of television, appealing shot and acted, with decently smart writing - engaging but yet still not making you think too hard. Which is, for television, very smart writing indeed.
I hate to turn you off that completely; it does have its merits. And I'm going to watch a few more episodes before I decide for once and for all, I think. But if you don't care for Criminal Minds, you *really* won't care for this - it's like CM on steroids. And in effect, it does simply hold a mirror up to society, IMO - but it does *not* say "And this is wrong and bad" so much as it...says nothing about the reflection, actually.
Which is part of the problem, I think. At least for me.
It's a very strong procedural show. Someone's done a lot of research on FBI and the methods of an investigation, I think, though they do shortcut it (and undercut it) for the sake of story.
...sometimes, reading the various works of John Douglas is not a plus. Heh.
I watched the first episode and immediately said no more... for all the reasons you said. Plus, I just can't abide watching several different groups of people fall under this serial killer's spell (hence the title, obviously). The pilot was well-written and well-acted and I'm sad that I can't continue with it.
