I agree with your take on Munroe's binary "Inside vs. Outside." To the girl the 'inside'in which her mother spends her time represents a feeling of darkness and oppression. In contrast, the life of her father on the 'outside' represents more positive reflections with feelings of empowerment.

I enjoyed you response and like what you said about the innocence of both the brother and sister, but as they develop they take on their gender roles. Munro really makes the reader think about how we accept these roles, in both overt and subtle ways.

I really agree that her feelings towards outside are really about freedom and adventure, but inside has a more jail like feel to her. I really liked how you pointed out that the children are both the same as they are young, both singing, but as they grow up the little boy stops singing and isnt scared and she continues to sing herself to sleep and continues to tell herself stories. I found it interesting that her stories changed from her doing the saving to being saved by men in her life.

I like your comments on "Boys and Girls". You said the outside represents freedom. You are right, but I have not thought that point before read your blog. I also think that the girl will shut the gate if her borther Laird not came to help her. What do you think of this?

I find it really interesting that you pinpointed singing at night as a difference between the sexes. I missed that when I read it and I really like the distinction. Boys and girls definitely become more male and female as they grow and become older and the singing is a great way of showing that change without explicitly stating it.
