To join on the new colour - depends a little on how wide your stripes are, but I'm assuming they're at least four rows each. In which case, all you do is knit the FIRST stitch of the row where you're starting the new colour with BOTH strands of yarn together, leaving a 'tail' of several inches on the new colour. Then drop the previous colour, and carry on with the new one. Knit to the end, knit back and make sure you knit both loops of that last stitch. Cut the old colour off, leaving enough to sew in. Pull the ends to make sure it's not too loopy. Then carry on in the new colour. Repeat as necessary. You can also, when you've done those two rows, tie the two ends together to make sure they don't pull loose before you've finished and had a chance to sew them in.

Thank you! I'm just ready to introduce the yellow so I'll have a go :D I really do suck though. It's taken me all day to do one stripe. The woman a few doors down offered to help. Maybe I should take her up on it!

Oh, yes, if you've got someone convenient who can show you, that'll make it much easier! Or you could go back to the woolshop and ask the woman there - she sounds the helpful sort, too.
