WHY DO I CONTINUOUSLY DISTRACT MYSELF FROM MY SCHOOL WORK, WITH PLANS TO GO TO BARNES AND NOBLE AND BUYING BOOKS THAT ARE NOT TEXTBOOKS?

Ugh, I've got Demanding the Impossible: A History of Anarchism to finish, start into the Wooblies and Zapatistas and then find time to get back into the Marx/Engler reader, because Marx and convoluted way of ( Read more... )

Aaaack, the Marx and Engels reader? Is this the one with the red cover? If so, it is the edition that all the grad students in my department read, as do all of the undergrads taking classical social theory. That reader made me want to scream so badly, because Marx just can't seem to say anything straight (the fact that he was writing in the 19th century, and in German, probably has something to do with this, but still).

Amusingly enough, whenever I carry that book along with me, older grad students will approach me to touch the book reverently, and proclaim the reader the BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED IN THEIR LIVES.

Sociologists crack me up sometimes.

YES, THE VERY SAME BOOK. I hate it, and Marx, because he writes in this loopy-doesn't-make-sense-to-anyone-but-himself way that means I have to spend hours putting a chapter into terms I can understand :P.

The first older grad student to do that to me, will promptly be kicked in the shin *smh*.

Seriously! My Marxism professor is an absolute nutjob over Marx- or Uncle Carl as he calls him :P.

I totally relate. I would rather be buying books that aren't textbooks as well. It's been a while since I've been to B&N ... I really need to go there lol. :D
