I didn't get the reference, but this is joyous and beautifully in-voice just the same.

The reference I'm getting is to Lovecraft's refusal to describe a darn thing. That's probably not the intended reference, but the fic was a good read nonetheless. Well done!

i wish i had sneaked in a schrodinger reference, because that seems like it would follow from just the pragmatic sort of solution ros would offer:

"Well, why don't you open the box up, then?" Rosencrantz asks finally from frustration.

"I can't open the box. And even if I could," Guildenstern insists, "even if I could, that's beside the point I'm trying to make. The point isn't what the beetle is after I've opened the box and shown it to you, it's what properties the beetle can be said to possess prior to revelation. Is it a beetle or is it not? Is it alive or is it dead? The answer must be yes and no, both and neither; it's a contradictory creature, a paradox, and an abomination unto God."

"I think you're being a bit hard on the poor beetle. It didn't choose to be a paradox."

Come on, now, really, is what the look Guildenstern gives Rosencrantz says, even as Guildenstern himself remains silent.

... and so on. anyway. thank you for your kind words!
