Aw, but that's lovely. Fingers crossed he'll think it looks like his dog, I guess you just can't tell!! But it's certainly a beautiful dog.
It struck me visiting some touristy shops that pictures of animals and things go down an absolute storm with 'the public', but I would always love abstract things like your encaustic more. Must be frustrating for artists who don't enjoy making art that makes money....
You're pretty lucky that you can do all kinds of art!

I have an artist friend who absolutely hates the whole commercial aspect of art. He is horrified (translate:goes off on a rant) about people that buy art to match their colour scheme. Me...I don't give a toss. If someone is willing to fork out money for a pink picture, pass me some pink paint. Guess, though, that is why I can count on one hand the things I've sold and he has had gallery showings and everyfink. He also has a huge amount of self belief. What was my point? No clue lol.

Will stick the photo I was working from in the post so you can see the dog. Hope the bloke likes it cause I have no desire to keep rehashing the same image.

I bet he'd have a different view of the things he liked doing didn't sell!! He's just lucky :p
I think he's definitely going to love it, now I've seen the photo :)

Oh this is beautiful! I love it, all the different shades, highlights, etc. really lifelike. I really don't know why you're not happy with it, it looks bloody good to me! Well done.

Thank you!!! It just doesn't feel as alive to me as my usual pet portraits *shrugs* but everyone I've heckled for an opinion shown it to says it looks great. Going to be very nervous about the bloke's opinion. I've stuck the original source photo in the post.

Well I think he looks absolutely gorgeous. Obviously I've not seen the original to judge how well you've captured him but it seems a 'real' and lively dog to me.
When you get these commissions, is there any chance of you seeing the animal for real and maybe taking your own photos to work from later?

Ta, luv! I've stuck the source photo in the post. Just being hyper critical of myself as usual, I think. Can't really offer to take the photos with strangers (or friends who have ask for commissions thro the post). I try and explain about the quality of the photos being incredibly important, but obv I know what I look for in a pic to draw and other people don't. The bloke did offer to get the photo blown up big for me but I did that myself with the help of the iPad! It's the lighting that's off. Sigh. I suspect a lot of the problem is my inexperience...

You've done brilliantly from a crap photo! Weird that he couldn't even manage to take one with the dog's ear the right way out! *g* People can be odd at times.

I'm still struggling to get a decent photo of Lady!

To be fair, he gave me three photos...but apparently that one was his absolute favourite and he specifically asked for the ear to be inside out. I offered to 'fix' it, but he said no. It was the best photo of the three tho. He was so excited about getting the portrait done so I just hope he isn't disappointed.

Getting a decent photo is really difficult, I think, it's why I take tons of photos. That's my excuse anyway.
