Somehow a reporter found out about the attempt to rescue the bunnies...and that they didn't make it..and the comments of people on the news site are just horrible

Those who go through a caticylismic event such as you did and survive are often second guessed by those who were not there. You did what you could to the best of your ability. While the loss of the animals is tragic, the important thing is that you were able to get yourself clear and to safety. Would the critics have been happier should you have attempted to go in against reason and been injured or killed yourself. If the waters were that deep and swift to tip their cages, and there was the toxicity of the water, and the possibility of electrification of the water, then it was no longer an area that would've sustained life, either human or animal. Grieve for them, but be consoled that had you been with them You would have very likely have been a victim too.
