I must start off by saying I read The Old Man and the Sea twice. And watched a really beautiful, but completely unknown, film adaptation (it was drawn by this Russian guy . . . but I digress). Books like that are how I compensate for a complete lack of appreciation for poetry. So I won't criticize you too much for not appreciating the subtleties of literature since I literally cannot tell the difference between bad and good poetry unless it's really obvious (written by a kindergartener vs. "To His Coy Mistress"). But all the same. I've often found that if I hate a book that is considered to be a classic or otherwise "excellently-written novel," I'll love it the second time I read it. This happened with As I Lay Dying. When you're reading it the second time, you care less about the plot (since you already know what it is) and can focus on the character development, symbolism, themes, syntax, diction, *insert more AP terms here*, etc. etc. I even liked The Great Gatsby the 2nd . . . 3rd . . . time around. I certainly don't keep
