Troy

So I decided to see Troy with some friends tonight, and I would like to say I hated it. I hated it by itself as a movie and hated it further as a movie version of the Illiad. Having read both the Trojan part of the Aeneid in Latin and the Illiad in English, I was offended by the lack of respect for the classical works. However, it did get me ( Read more... )

Did you catch how they tried to set up the Aeneid at the end? Paris hands the sword of Troy to a young boy named Aeneas. Never mind that Aeneas was an accomplished Trojan warrior in his own right.

I found Troy extremely offensive.

the idea was if all Spartan warriors were paired like that, they would fight for eachother even harder.

What I found REALLY shitty was that they said that Menelaus was king of Sparta. He was king of Argos. Why did that change that? It was completely unnecessary!

Not to mention that they killed Menelaus and Agamemnon, which fucking screws the best Greek play ever written, the Oresteia...

God, I hope they don't try to make an Aeneid... and if they do and put some sword of Troy in it, I'll fucking kill them. There was no sword of Troy... that was completely made up for the movie =(

And yes, all the inaccurate deaths and misattributions did make the movie worse.

But, if you just try to watch the movie as just a story someone completely made up and has nothing to do with some book the main character of The Simpsons wrote, then I can forgive those things. I can't forgive the movie for being a 2:45 borefest, however.

Aeneas dies near the end of the Aeneid, but his two lines in Troy ("Aeneas" and "Ok") do not give him time to die.
