When I was growing up, if a child came down with a communicable disease, all the parents in the neighbourhood made sure that there own kids were exposed so they'd get the illness out of the way. Of course, this was back when polio was the only thing you were innoculated against; measles, mumps, chicken pox, etc. were just things kids got.

The odd thing is that my brother and my friends all got the usual childhood diseases when we were growing up and, although I was around them all the time when they were infectious, I never got anything other than measles. I have a funny immune system. The disease that destroyed my kidneys was probably autoimmune and some other minor issues I've had are definitely autoimmune. Maybe my antirejection meds actually help by calming my immune system down a bit!
