Snow. Covering the streets, the roofs of the few houses around them, the trees, creating a perfect white world which ate at the ends of their muddy overcoats, making them look like black stains splashed on the piles of brilliant cold. The silence oppressed the couple of strangers walking down one of the alleys, almost making it hard to breathe. The taller white-haired man, who was holding a smaller child by the hand, was panting slightly, producing puffs of semi-transparent white haze out of his mouth. The child, on the other hand looked excited, judging by the part of the face that wasn’t covered by it’s scarf and hat. The large, almond-shaped hazel eyes shone with a peculiar light - the light of a youth that still hadn’t been trampled by life. It held out a gloved hand and watched as the snowflakes melted as they made contact. Everything was so very pretty and not a single detail should have been left unobserved. Alas, the older man didn’t seem to share the fascination for the scenery which the child had. He pulled the little hand gently in the hope of making the little feet walk faster but in stead the child let go and ran down the alleyway, stopping at the very end of it where it met with another, bigger street. It dug its hands deep into the snow and withdrew them hastily, throwing as much as it could around, creating a miniature blizzard of silvery snowflakes. The man caught up and stopped next to the child, patting it on the shoulder and pointing to the left of him. It turned around and gasped at the sight of the large black iron-bar gate, separating the orphanage from the rest of the world. Wammy’s House - the building that the little newcomer would call home from now on.
The man smiled as the gates opened and they crossed the snowy path that led to the big wooden front doors.
“Are you ready?”, he asked his companion.
The child merely nodded. There really wasn’t any need to say anything - it was quite obvious that it was excited enough to start jumping around in the snow.
He noticed the fact and pushed the heavy doors which made a screeching sound before coming to a halt. The child took a few precautious steps over the door-sill and onto the marble floor inside. It slowly withdrew the scarf and hat that were obscuring its face previously to reveal a pale face, aligned with long golden hair that fell under the shoulders of the girl. Once she had removed the heavy clothing, she looked a lot older - perhaps because her face could be seen or perhaps of the slender figure she actually had. The girl tried to straighten out her hair and pulled on the pin that was holding her bangs to one side to make sure it was still there. Finally, after inspecting every last detail of the magnificent marble staircase and hall and gasping at it, she was interrupted by a little cough, apparently produced by Watari. She turned around to face him, a wide grin on her face.
“Welcome to Wammy’s House. I, Quillish Wammy, founder of this institution, am very proud to have you as a member of our lot, Miss.”, he recited.
“Oh, Watari-san, you’re embarrassing me. There is no need for these formalities; I already know I’m welcome. Thank you.”, she replied and bowed. She noticed some commotion around the staircase - several faces were showing through the banisters, inspected the newcomer curiously. She smiled at them and waved: “Hello!”.
Watari was taken rather aback by her outburst of friendliness and produced another little cough.
“Would you please come to my office now? I’d like to properly check you in with the documentation and all…”, he pointed towards a polished door to the left of the staircase. She nodded silently and went in after him.
He sat behind his big desk and withdrew some papers from it. Watari adjusted his glasses, took a pen and looked expectantly at the girl. She, on her behalf waited for the questions to start.
“Your full name, please.”
Half an hour had passed since he had started questioning her and finally, jotting down the last bit of information, said she was free to go.
“Would you like me to show you to your room? The girl’s dormitories are quite empty but if you want to share a room with someone I think it can be arranged.”
“Maybe a single room would be better for me since I wouldn’t want to disturb anyone by barging in on them. And don’t worry, I’ll find it on my own just tell me where it is.”
“Up the stairs, then the hallway to the left - that’s the girl’s side. Your room is number four. Your luggage should be there already.”
“Thanks a lot, Watari-san! I’m looking forward to seeing you again!”, she bowed and took her leave.
The girl went up the stairs and noticed a group of girls standing in front of the big window occupying the wall between the two hallways. She made a move towards the left one but was stopped by a hand one of the girls had held up.
“You seem awfully cocky for a new kid. I presume your simplicity doesn’t permit you to suppose that we have rules around here?”, she said in a sickeningly silky voice. The girls around her sniggered.
“…excuse me?”
“Oh, was that too complicated for the little simpleton? Sorry, I’m accustomed to speaking in correct English.”
The girl raised her eyebrow at them.
“Oh really? Then Miss All-correct-English should understand simpleton, too right? Get lost.”
The smiles immediately faded off of the faces of the other girl and her friends.
“What…did you say?”, she caught her by the collar and shook her.
The new girl didn’t loose any time in screaming but hit the one that was clutching her shirt squarely in the face in stead.
“Oi, will you stop bullying…the kid?”, a voice came from behind them.
She turned around and saw a boy with shoulder-length blonde hair had appeared from the other hallway. Apparently, he wanted to say stop the girl who was now sitting on the floor, clutching her mouth which was bleeding.
“Uh, Yuri…? Guess I was too late. Oh well.”, he grabbed the new girl by the hand and pulled her down the stairs. “Come on, let’s get outta here!”
Once they were down he ushered her into the first hallway they could see.
“That wasn’t pretty smart ya know. Gettin’ into a fight on your first day? Reminds me of me actually...”
The girl looked at him with an apathetic expression on her face.
“Oh right. Now that I’ve gotten you outta that situation you’d better thank me…uh…what’s your name again?”
“Mirror. And yours?”
“I’m Mello.”
“Well sorry Mello, but you looked like a complete idiot back there.”
Silence fell. It took a few seconds for Mello to actually understand what she had said.
“…what?”
“Anyway. You did stop me from killing that bi…never mind. Thanks!”, she said and shone him a bright smile. “Now if you don’t mind, I’m tired and I’d like to go and rest. Bye~”
“Wha…hey, wait!”, he shouted after her.
“Yah, see you again later~”, she waved and ran up the stairs.
