Here's an icon tutorial requested by Andrea [
_likeablade]. :]
Made in PS7, involves hue/saturation and selective color.
I also fiddled around with curves and color balance to replace the selective color layer for PSP users. You're welcome! lol
Going from:
to
Step 1:
Take your picture, resize it, crop, etc.
Step 2:
Duplicate your base layer twice. Set the second layer (first duplicate) to screen at 70% opacity.
Step 3:
On the second duplicate, desaturate it (ctrl+shift+u). Set the topmost layer (second duplicate) to soft light at 30% opacity.
Step 4:
Make a new layer and fill it with #F2858D. Set this layer to color burn at 60% opacity.
Step 5:
Make a new Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer above all layers. Up the master saturation to +30. Leave this layer on normal at 100% opacity.
Step 6:
Create another new layer above your hue/saturation layer. Fill this layer with #020A2A and set it to exclusion at 70% opacity.
Step 7:
Make another new layer to go above your exclusion layer. Remember the days way back when when icon makers always used exclusion + multiply layers? Well, I used that old technique in this icon. :D Fill this layer with #F6F1DB and set it to...multiply at 100% opacity.
Step 8 - FOR PHOTOSHOP USERS ONLY!
I'll start with the selective color layer first.
Settings are as follows, but of course should be edited to your heart's desire:
Yellows-
-100,0,+100
Neutrals-
+100, 0, -35
Step 8 - FOR PAINT SHOP PRO USERS!
PSP users- make a new color balance layer with the following settings (edit as you'd like):
Midtones-
-39, +15, -11
Shadows-
-36, -21, +13
Preserve Luminosity checked.
Step 9 - FOR PAINT SHOP PRO USERS!
I made a new curves layer to make the icon more blue, like the original:
Blue-
Point 1: 182, 169
Point 2: 36, 63
If you need a screenshot of this layer or help, feel free to ask me. :]
Step 10 - ALL USERS
I took the above texture, by
peoplemachines, and set it to screen at 100% opacity.
And you're done! =D
I'd love to see what you guys create using this tutorial!
