Not so surprising, I guess, but I think their marketing strategy is pretty interesting: Conservez votre eau et jetez votre tondeuse qui pollue jusqu'a 100 fois plus qu'une simple voiture! The environmental angle, ( Read more... )

A lot of lawnmowers use two-stroke engines, which actually emit straight, unburned motor oil as exhaust--a horrible, horrible pollutant. Bigger lawnmowers are actually better for the environment, as they are more likely to use a four-stroke engine (when I was working as a landscaper, I had this gargantuan lawn-mower, which worked really well and had a four-stroke engine). Of course, the 100x is a big lie: some cars actually use two-stroke engines (though, admittedly, only USSR-made cars have used them since 1971), and a two-stroke engine only pollutes about 100x the amount of a car at the same horsepower (most cars are about 100x the horsepower of a lawn-mower, so this means that cars and lawnmowers pollute about the same).
