I have a friend who desperately wants to have a baby. She is overweight and has had gastric bypass surgery. She has lost a lot of weight but every time she tries to talk to a doctor about fertility treatments they refuse to do anything for her because she is still overweight. She just left my office crying because her husband is going to Iraq in ( Read more... )

Which doctors has she already tried? All I can suggest is Bennett Fertility Institute. If she's already tried them, then I don't know because the other reproductive endocrinologists in OKC have much lower success rates, and when you're talking about the amount of money that fertility treatments cost, you'd probably want the highest success rate you can get...

I'm not sure if she's tried anyone in Oklahoma yet. Her husband is in the military and she just moved here. They've been trying to get pregnant for years though, both in England and in Texas. I know she's had trouble with doctors in both of those places. I'll give her the info on Bennett Fertility Institute.

If she's willing to go to Tulsa, I absolutely, positively cannot recomment Dr. Judith Blackwell highly enough. I weighed around 300 lbs when I went to her, and she is worth the trip and the money. I got pregnant with Johanna after seeing her for about 4 months. She was NEVER critical about my weight and said, in fact, that though we can certainly weigh enough to cause health concerns, it's stupid to tell a woman of childbearing years to lose weight before she has a baby because, at that point, "We weigh what we're gonna weigh." She said a woman's more likely to have a high-risk pregnancy if she puts off child-bearing until she's in her forties because she's been trying to lose weight for so long first than if she has a child at a younger age but is fat. Anyway, I completely, totally understand your friend's pain, and I KNOW she'll love Dr. Blackwell if she can manage the Tulsa thing.

Thank you so much! I think this is exactly the kind of information she is looking for. I will let her know right away.

Excellent info from Kerri as always! :)

Maybe your friend should call both places since there's usually a wait to get an appointment, and she's only got 4-5 months to work with... I don't know what treatments she needs, but one IVF cycle takes 2 months, and there's a bunch of bs to get through before it can even start, so maybe she could just call both places to find out which could get started sooner...

Kerri's suggestion doesn't take my friend's insurance so I'm for sure going to give her both options.
