Rating: G
Characters: Grace Harmony
A/N: A bit rusty on the writing thing, but you know. Not spell-checked/proof-read.
"Welcome back, Miss Harmony."
Grace smiled at the old abbess. "Thank you Abithia."
The elderly woman turned, gesturing mildly for the younger to follow. "It has been some time since you've come in for a visit. I'm sure that you are very busy with your duties in the city."
"Yeah, I suppose." came the reply. The truth was, she was growing a bit... bored. She had already done the sewers, the giant demonic monsters, and the whirlwind controversial affair. And now it all just seemed... just like another day at the office. Not that she didn't like her job. But...
"But?" The Parridon agent blinked at the woman (well, one of the many) who helped to raise her turned to look at her with a wispy white brow raised.
Grace chuckled, tracing her hands against the smooth stone walling as they walked. "You know me too well, Mother." She sighed, clasping her hands behind her head and looking up and the cold steel and candles above their heads. "It's nothing, really. I suppose that I'm just thinking of... settling down. And settling down seems to simply..." she shrugged, "...not settle with me."
The nun nodded as they turned the corner into the open garden hall. Graced missed the smell of the flowers the women tended to dutifully every morning just before dawn. They had taught her so much.
"Perhaps you should not try to "settle" as it is, just for the sake of doing so. It may be that the Lord is whispering to you that you are more special than you believe. And that someone like you deserves a bit more than to settle for any old thing."
"Well, it's not just... any old thing..." Grace started, wrinkling her nose. "And I'm not all that special."
The old woman chuckled, the sound as soft as her robes trailing against the cool floors. "You are a briliiant young woman, Grace. We knew that the moment we saw you upon the Abbey steps." She smiled at the memory. "You were so curious, so warm and willing to learn everything you could. We knew that you were destined for many great things. They may not be loud, or always earth-shaking... but all greatness comes with--"
"--a touch of grace. I remember." The young woman smiled. "Thank you. I'm glad I came to visit. I have missed you. You are my family, after all."
"One of many, I know." Abithia smiled. "I am glad that you came as well, Grace."
The agent's smile grew into a grin. "So... you said in your letter that you were having sewer rat problems. Have they eaten anything bigger than a cat, yet?" Yup. Just another day at the office.
