Title: He Didn't Care
Rating: PG
Characters: Riku. Well, one of them, at least.
A/N: The other ficlet inspired by our last lovely prompt. I owe it to
dolevalan as she gave me two lovely fics of her own. This came out to be more of a flash fic, in the end, I suppose, but... ah well.
He didn't care. Why should he, after all? This wasn't his fight. Not really.
He wasn't here for his own good. Not anymore.
There was no reason for him to get involved. These weren't his friends. At least, he didn't have to make them more than they needed to be. They were just participants in a greater scheme. And he was a guide, to show them different paths. Crossroads. But not paths that were his to take. Not directions that he was to point to. That wasn't the point.
That wasn't his purpose.
He wasn't here as a friend. Or a mentor. Or a companion. He was just... here. These weren't his choices, after all.
There was any need to put any feeling into it. To have any compassion, when they didn't listen. When, even after he warned them, they took the path into darkness.
Just like he had done, once upon a time.
He could only follow, though he wondered if there had been someone, back then, like him, trying to push him towards a better path. A better choice.
What other choice?
There was no point in trying to be civil. No point in smiling or sharing conversation. Sharing a bit of warmth. No point. It wouldn't do any good in the end. Because he knew. He knew, that he would just end up loosing her. Them. Just like...
Just like...
But he didn't care. So when she cried, and he held her, it was only so she'd keep going. And when he told her that everything would be alright, it wasn't really for her sake. It certainly wasn't for his own.
When he clentched his jaw and curled his fingers into his pillow, and cursed the great Gods that murmured soft words against his skin, it wasn't because he was angry for what they were doing. Or what he was incapable of doing. They would not do. He, could not.
Always...
But he didn't care, really. These were not his choices. These were not his friends.
Neither were his to have, anymore.
