She never had loved him. She never would. And he would never love her. They both had the people that claimed their hearts. Even if those people... would never have them.

She considered him lucky. He had his difficulties. The hard times. The bad times. But at least... the one he would belong to - the one to which he belonged... would be there. She would love him, even if they could not be together.

As for herself... she watched. And waited. She came, when called. She satisfied, when asked. He never had to ask - it was because he still did, on most occasions, that she held hope.

After all, without hope, what else was there?

The detective could call on her, though. Surely he knew. But he was a much more dedicated soul. He could never stray from his love. Not now. Maybe not ever, if she had not offered. They weren't in love. But they had kindred spirits. And that was something.

These days she did not even see him, but she remembered. A few, fleeting moments. A smile, borne of desperation. And of hope. Some were under the guise of deception. They had been enemies. Or at least, allied to opposite sides, which isn't the same thing. Now...

Now, they were not enemies. And perhaps that was the reason she never went to check on him again. The reason that he never really spoke to her, if they passed incidentally, besides a nod of the head.

She... missed him, in a way. There was something bonding them. Something quiet, and unspoken, but undeniably strong. The love of another is, undeniable, strong. They had that. Together. Separately.

She would never forget.

It was painful, to watch the one she knew she could never completely satisfy. To watch him sink deeper in despair.

The pain was similar, as she watched him. She watched him hope, and reach, and fall as his love fell away from him. Into the darkness.

She thought of going to him, but.

But.

In the end... all there was, was hope. They could hope, together, separately.

And perhaps someday... someday they would cross one another's path, and see the other at their arms. To see the light in their eyes and the shadows gather about them.

And have real reason to smile.
