Title: Five AUs Where Sam and Dean are Orphans, and One Where They're Not
Author: rougepinapple
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Sam, Dean, John, Mary
Warnings: Lots of character death, unbetaed
Word Count: 666 (because I was that bored)
Summary: What it says on the tin. Written for the 'orphans' square on my hc_bingo card.

One:

“Take your brother outside as fast as you can. Don’t look back. Now, Dean! Go!”

As Dean disappears from his sight, John focuses on his wife burning on the ceiling. It makes no sense, absolutely none, and John’s half convinced it’s just a very bad dream. Then the fire spreads, too hot and too bright, and it sears his skin and temporarily blinds him. Mary is eaten by the fire, and it spreads and spreads, until it consumes the room and then explodes in an angry burst that John narrowly escapes, and he thinks thank god, Sammy, Dean before the room explodes and he too is devoured by the flames.

Two:

Sam is twelve when his father dies thanks to a wendigo. Dean tries his hardest, but he’s sixteen and he can’t hide them from the CPS forever. They take him and Dean away, to an orphanage, and it’s everything Sam had dreaded and hoped. Dreaded, because they stick him away with this gross five year old who would eat everything, and they treat him like he’s five, which he’s so not. Hoped because it’s finally a normal life and Dad isn’t pulling him away from school anymore for some stupid hunt and forcing him to be the new kid again, which he hates.

Plus, he and Dean are still together.

Three:

It’s a car crash. That’s all.

Top of his head, Dean can think of a thousand ways for his parents to go. Car crash wasn’t even in the top 50. Maybe top 100, but still. Dean doesn’t think about his parent’s death all that much.

But car crash. The car was there, it swerved, it flipped, and it bounced. The engine caught on fire (it’s always fire, isn’t it?), but it wasn’t the fire that killed his parents. It was the impact. The impact that broke her neck and his skull, and the damned car didn’t even have the courtesy to stay fixable. His parents were pronounced dead on arrival.

Four:

So there’s Dean, and there’s Sam. There’s their uncle, Bobby, and Aunt Ellen. And then there’s Cousin Joanna, who’s cute, but she’s, like, four. And a girl and Sam don’t like girls much. Except for Ellen, because Ellen’s awesome. Dean said so and Dean knows everything.

Sam’s six now, and he wants to know where Mommy and Daddy are. Dean says their Mommy and Daddy died and Dean would know because Dean’s ten. Sam doesn’t remember them, not at all, but Dean says they were great. Sam doesn’t really care, because he never knew them and Uncle Bobby and Aunt Ellen seem more like Mommy and Daddy to him anyway.

Five:

Mary loves her children with all her heart. It’s why when her husband died on that fateful night, she didn’t change. Didn’t hunt that son of a bitch demon like she wanted to with all her heart. It caught up with her all the same, as things tend to do around there.

So here’s Dean, her baby boy, her firstborn, lying still in that hospital bed and the doctor saying that they have to prepare for the worst, with Sammy hurting from the prospect of his big brother dying… well, what else is a mother supposed to do?

So she made the deal. But she left them the journal first.

One:

Dean can’t believe it. Sure, Dad’s dead, but it was peaceful, y’know? It is what you want, as much as anyone wants death. But people are happy. They’re all so… happy. Sam has Jess and he’s still in Stanford, Mom (Dean still can’t believe it) is never alone, and he even has someone.

Carmen is beautiful, that much is obvious. She’s smart and compassionate; she’s a nurse after all, but she isn’t perfect. She would be, should be, but it’s not the right place. Not the right reality, because the world is fake. A figment of his imagination, or the djinn’s. Someone’s. It doesn’t matter.

Dean has to get back.
