I used to be afraid of fire. I wouldn't light matches. I wouldn't learn to light a lighter (I still can't). I wouldn't light my parents' gas stove; I'd have my brother do it if I wanted to cook. Gradually the fear eased, but it took almost 20 years, no joke. And I don't know what changed. (I used to be afraid of a lot of things, like being in public alone, that don't scare me now, but I don't know why.)
