$65,000/1.5=$43,000

(where 1.5=60 hours/40 hours)

So on a per hour basis, you're making more. Factor in job security and stress levels, and you're way ahead. Plus it sounds like you like your job and are happy there.

Would the extra $X thousand a year let you buy a place anyway? And what's the point of an extra few thousand if you have no time to enjoy it?

And if you factor in overtime, F$65,000/1.75 = F$37,142.

Last year I took a job that gave me a 13% pay raise, but cut my hours back to where I'm actually making a good deal less, as the overtime at the old job brought me 25% more than my base most paydays (and quite a bit more on others). But the reduced stress levels, the more pleasant working conditions, and the opportunities for actual advancement in the company certainly make up for it.

That said, an A$51,100 job (as opposed to a F$51,100) job can get you a house in Memphis, and considering that F$51,000 > ASchoolteacher Salary X 2, it could buy you a condo with a rooftop swimming pool, with enough left over for a German Engineered car that's not a Volkswagon.

Roup, some of my fellow classmates are starting at between 125,000-145,000. A select few of them bitched that they don't know how they're going to do it with loans and everything. One woman in particular, who doesn't have a dume in debt, bemoans her low salary.

So don't feel bad about being a whiny yuppie. You have quite a ways to go, especially with your COLA.

And you wouldn't believe how late the girl was with my latte this morning...

Yeah. I hear you. We should totally get her sacked.

Well, I know a little bit in general about the income of both you and roupbro and wife. I think that this year they (combined) finally surpassed you, but not by much. And that's because roupbro does a significant amount of outside work. So your salary is still pretty grand by most folks' standards, as you acknowledge. As you also admit, you're not the "work 60 hours a week" type of dude (thankfully). Also remember your other benefits, especially related to retirement. Besides the company's loyalty to employees, it's increasingly rare to find the kind of deal you're getting. I know retirement seems far away now, but you have the ability to achieve it at a younger age than roupmom and roupdad, and with a higher standard at that time, I believe. That's not to be taken too lightly, and the time will be here before you know it. Love 'ya.
