Fly Me To The Moon

Jack was working late, the main lights of the Hub dimmed, while little pools of light emitted from his office where he sat and illuminated Ianto’s desk where the young man was working steadily through his pile of reports. Jack had been working hard for over an hour, but he’d found his eyes straying more and more often to the studious Welshman. He hated paperwork - necessary evil of Torchwood - and had only been persuaded to do the amount he had by certain ‘promises’ issued by his lover. For a moment Jack’s eyes glazed over as he though about those promises.

He was brought out of his daze by the blue light from the TV screen catching the shade of the lamp on his desk. Turning his head his eyes focused on the weather report currently displayed on the screen. He kept a close eye on any changes in the weather these days, just in case. But the forecast currently being displayed put nothing but a smile on his face. Glancing once more in Ianto’s direction, an idea began to form in his head.

Jumping up from his desk, the chair spinning out behind him, Jack ran out of his office, past the quietly humming computers and down the stairs. The sound of his boots hitting the metal was enough to rouse Ianto from his work to turn his head in Jack’s direction. The questioning look in his eyes was swiftly replaced by one of shock and surprise as Jack grabbed his hand and pulled the young man over to the lift at a run.

Stumbling slightly as he was dragged enthusiastically onto the lift, Ianto grabbed at Jack’s shoulders to stay upright.

“Jack!” His voice was a mixture of breathlessness and exasperation. “Jack, I was working, like you should be! What the hell are you up to?”

If possible, Jack’s grin grew even wider. Ianto thought he looked like a little child on Christmas morning, all excitement and gleeful delight

He looked at Ianto. “Surprise,” he said cheekily and lifted his face to look at the night sky they were rising slowly towards. Ianto took a moment from his frustration at Jack’s behaviour to admire the beautiful lines of his face and the muscles of his neck which were pulled tight as he looked up. After a few seconds of admiration though, Ianto’s practical head made itself known.

“But what about the Hub? There’s no one else…”

“We won’t be long. Quit fretting,” Jack replied, tugging lightly on Ianto’s hand to pull him closer into his side as they rose past the large stones of the pavement around the water tower to emerge into the night air.

The late hour meant that the Plass was practically deserted, the wide expanse of pavement still and quiet, apart from a few people wandering the edges. A cooling breeze blew in from the water.

As the stone lift came to a stop Jack, retaining his grip on Ianto’s hand, pulled him off and ran towards the centre of the dipped Plass.

“Sir. I really think…”

His protestations were cut short by Jack stopping in the middle of the Plass. Keeping his arm straight, Jack swung Ianto round to face him before pulling him in close, their bodies touching from chest to toes. Jack’s other hand came up to rest on Ianto’s waist.

“Five minutes,” he said. “Five minutes of no thinking.” He turned his head to look up once again. “Look.”

Ianto looked. The night sky was crystal clear, the stars bright against the dark sky. Up high a full moon shone down, big and lonely.

Jack began to sway them from side to side, Ianto’s hand automatically coming up to rest against Jack’s chest, his fingers curling into the fabric of the shirt and picking absently at the braces stretched taut across the broad expense of his chest.

For a moment Ianto was gripped by a need to glance around to see if they were being watched but then Jack’s gaze returned to his face and their eyes met. Suddenly, whether or not people were watching them didn’t matter to Ianto. The happiness visible in Jack’s eyes was enough to cause his breath to catch in his throat

Jack held tight to Ianto’s hand, resting their clasped fingers over his heart. Gently, he began moving his feet and Ianto followed is lead until they were dancing softly in the middle of the Plass. Jack moved his head to rest his cheek against Ianto’s, feeling the heat radiating from the young man’s skin. Closing his eyes and just enjoying the different sensations, Jack began to hum. Before long his humming began to form into words.

“Fly me to the moon,
And let me play among the stars.”

Listening to Jack’s rich voice softly singing in his ear, Ianto smiled contentedly. He often thought about the picture he had once witnessed of Jack standing high up on a roof, standing tall against a backdrop of stars. He had seemed unearthly and somehow at home up there. He knew so much about the stars, one night pointing out and naming many of them for him and Toshiko as they sat by the Bay eating chips.

“In other words, hold my hand,
In other words darling, kiss me”

Ianto wasn’t stupid. He had stored up all the little facts Jack had let slip about himself and all the titbits of information he had scrounged from the Archives. Ianto knew Jack wasn’t from around here. Where exactly he was from remained a mystery, but looking at Jack now, and seeing the happiness radiating from him, it was easy to believe that Jack belonged up there, playing amongst the stars.

“Fly me to the moon,
And let me play among the stars.
Let me see what spring is like
On Jupiter or Mars.”

As Jack came to the end of the song Ianto raised his head to look at the man who held him. Opening his mouth to say something he was rudely interrupted as a stumbling group of girls made their way precariously along the steps to their left.

“Oi oi, boys! Give us a snog!”

The girls cackled loudly, obviously eyeing up the two men. Suddenly one of the girls stumbled in her heels, lurching into the girl in front of her. Both of them went stumbling forward down the stairs. The groups’ attention was distracted as one of them fell.

Ianto turned back to Jack and rolled his eyes. Jack was struggling to contain his giggles.

“Bloody typical,” sighed Ianto.

Jack laughed out loud. “Come on then gorgeous, ‘give us a snog’,” he said, imitating the girls.

And, for the second time that night not caring about who was watching, Ianto pulled Jack into a passionate kiss, tongues tangling, hands gripping the back of heads and fingers digging into hips.

It was minutes before the two men parted, panting desperately for breath. Still holding each other they rested their foreheads together and revelled in the stillness, listening only to the harsh sound of their breathing and the odd bird calling into the night.

Ianto sighed and pulled away slightly. “Come on gorgeous, back to work.”

As Jack reluctantly turned to head back to the Hub he couldn’t resist one last glance up at the moon. Ianto saw, and sighed once more.

“Back to Earth,” he muttered under his breath.
