Ed leaned forward and grabbed Athrun's shoulders, using them as a support to lift himself up and flip over his opponent to avoid the attack. He quickly pivoted to face Athrun again, aiming another spinning kick at him.
Ed fell back, but he caught himself with his hands similar to how Athrun had earlier, and he pushed himself back up to land on his feet but immediately jumping to do a kind of side-flip, swinging both his legs to try to land another kick.
Athrun was thrown back by the force, and landed on his own back. But he let his momentum carry him into a roll, and managed to avoid Ed's kick. He returned to his feet, waiting for his opponent once again to make the next move.
Ed wasn't prepared for that, and he stumbled and fell over along with Athrun. He felt the air forced out of his lungs when he hit the ground, but he pushed himself up all the same, preparing himself for the next potential attack.
Ed did as expected, not particularly wanting anything to come in contact with his face. He used to right arm to deflect Athrun's left fist and his left to barely deflect the other punch, opening up his defenses and thrusting his left foot out for a front kick to the chest.
Athrun was hit square in the chest by Ed's kick, and was knocked backwards a few feet. Even with the wind knocked out of him and his ribs aching, Athrun climbed back to his feet and assumed a stance. He'd wait for Ed to make the next move again.
He didn't have to wait long. Ed came flying at him, sensing he had the upper hand after landing that kick, and slid in low and crouching only to spring up to send another kick flying to the side of Athrun's head.
Damnit. Sorry Ed, but it doesn't look like you're winning the match that easy. He had gotten way a bit too confident, and Athrun's punch connected pretty hard. He doubled over as the air was forced out of his lungs, but he still wasn't about to give up.
Ed gritted his teeth as he sank to his knees, but he managed to grab a hold of Athrun's leg, suddenly pushing himself forward to try to topple him over.
Athrun went with it, and used the momentum to his advantage. He landed on his hands, then pulled his legs up into the air as fast and as hard as he could manage.
He felt the wind run past his face as Athrun kicked up with his legs. He pushed himself back, his opponent's feet just missing his chin. Ed was still having trouble picking himself back up, but he did it, gasping for air to fill his lungs even if it hurt like hell. He was back on the defensive, waiting for the next attack.

Except he didn't expect that to connect. The moment Ed made a reaction, he'd throw his right fist at his solar plexus.
