Gudge looks up from the small black contraption he's been soldering for the last while. Waving the curls of smoke away, he cocks his head to one side. "Um, yeah," he says, "I've been pondering that for several weeks now, working up some plans for my own robot, though I've been a little sidetracked of late working on this little beastie." He points to the box in front of him. "I've yet to run it by the school, though, for official okay and the like. Are you interested in building a 'bot to whap the shit out of the other 'bots?"
"Oh, fuck," he mutters, "pardon my total lack of manners... I don't think we've met, though I know I've seen you about." He extends his hand in greeting. "I'm Cameron Gudgeon, or Gudge to most folks around here. It's nice to see a female Nocker around here. It'll shake the boy's club up a bit, y'know?"
Helli curtsies despite the fact she's wearing overalls. "Hellitrope Rocoro, though most people call me Helli. It's a pleasure to meet you Gudge. And you're right, this place is quite the furbing sausage-fest. Don't worry though, I can hold my own." "As for the robots, I was on the FIRST Robotics team back at my old school. We won the regionals with our bot. I also built stuff for our Science Olympiad team. I was hoping to get into something similar here. I don't suppose we have a FIRST team, do we? Cause we could totally rock the competition if we did."
(If you're not familiar with FIRST check out http://www.usfirst.org/ and for the Science Olympiads http://www.soinc.org/ FIRST is exclusively robotics, while the Science Olympiads includes many events, a good number that involve building things like robots, catapults, ect. Both seem like ideal places for nocker students to excel and enjoy themselves)
Gudge nods slightly, returning her greeting. "Nice to meetcha, Helli!"
His forehead crinkles in thought. "None of the other Nockers have mentioned anything FIRST related to me, but I'm not high on the fucking pecking order here, either." He shrugs, and continues. "That said, it sounds like a prime event to get hooked into. It'd give the class a little spice and competition." He smiles as a thought comes to him. "We could bring it up to the shop teacher, and see what he thinks."
As they start to stoll over to the instructor, he continues, "Even if the school doesn't want to officially get involved with FIRST, there's nothing saying we can't build this shit ourselves just for the fun of it."
"Very true," replies Helli, "But it's more fun to kick the ass of other schools. And if you win the regionals you get to travel to the national level compeition."
Helli looks around for Ms. McDougal. Spotting her, Helli turns to Gudge. "I'm going to go ask her." The young eager knocker walks towards her grump instructor. "Oh Ms. McDougal....."
