Friends Only

Mar 01, 2020 18:39

Hi there! I’m Mira…at least, for the purposes of any online-only interactions. Google searches on my real name and stuff on here don’t turn up the same results, and I’d like to keep it that way. I’m in my mid-twenties and a lifelong resident of the D.C. area, minus two years in Boston spent earning an MBA in nonprofit management. (No, "nonprofit MBA" is not an oxymoron. Trust me. The ability to make these distinctions is one of the few direct applications for my undergraduate major in creative writing.)

If you’re interested in friending me, there are a few things you should probably be aware of before commenting:

- I am a very big fan of Harry Potter, as well as several other fantasy and sci-fi series: Discworld, Star Trek, and A Song of Ice and Fire are just a few examples. I do make an effort these days to keep the truly obsessive material confined to online acquaintances, and am willing to consider even more specialized filters for certain topics if enough people are interested to make it worth the effort. But if you have an aversion to geek culture, and consider the previous phrase an oxymoron, this is not the journal you’re looking for. (And pardon me for asking, but how did you end up on LJ anyway?)

- Posts about my real life and real-life issues typically won’t have more than a basic friends-lock, though I do make frequent use of cuts. Not interested? Just skim. Apart from an occasional “State of Mira’s Mental/Social/Professional Well-Being” entry, you won’t be missing much other than innocuous anecdotes about cats or annoying yet lovable family members; I do want to keep this somewhat private, after all. Plus, my boyfriend, John (dilbert719), is on all of my filters, so I can’t really talk about anything that would embarrass him.

- Speaking of real-life issues, “politics,” “liberal,” and “Washington” are not dirty words to me, and I get easily annoyed with people who toss them around as though they are. I also enjoy a good religious discussion from time to time, though I’m less likely to start one, as my own views on that particular subject aren’t as well defined despite (or perhaps because of) my many years of Hebrew school attendance.

- I don’t take or post every meme that comes along, but I do like sharing particularly interesting or fun ones. I’ll do my best to keep the big ones behind a cut, but I think that sometimes the main page needs a graphic or two to break up the text.

- I do not post in my own journal or make comments in other people's on a regular basis. However, this does not mean that I am not a faithful reader. Please keep this in mind if you base your friends cuts on posting quotas.

- In case you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m a big fan of parentheses. Adverbs, too, though I’m trying to cut back. As for the lolcat-speak…well, let’s not get into that.

If I have friended you and you still have no idea why or who I am, there are two possibilities:

1. I’ve read some comments from you in someone else’s journal or a community, and think you are an amusing, insightful, and/or talented individual I would like to get to know better. I do not expect you to reciprocate, though obviously I would be very happy if you do.

2. I have strong reason to believe you are someone I know or used to know in real life: probably a former high school or college classmate. I am curious about how you are doing and think you liked me well enough not to mind catching up this way. Again, you are under no obligation to reciprocate. (If I’m mistaken about the liking me part, though, please tell me before taking out any restraining orders.)

Additional questions? Concerns? Random interjections? Just want me to shut up and friend you already? Leave a screened comment below.
