Character Information
Character Name and Series: (Prince) Koenma, YuYu Hakusho
Name in Role Play: Koenma (Prince Koenma Koenma Prince for tax purposes ^_~)
Race/Ethnicity: kami/unknown (suspected Indian-Japanese)
Age: 700+
Gender: male

Appearance: In public Koenma usually appears as fair-skinned young human male with brown hair and light, golden-brown eyes that have a distinctly Asian slant to them. His true form is humanoid as his position as a kami requires him to interact with the souls of humans (his father’s form is also humanoid although of gigantic proportions). He’s slim and is on the taller side of things, standing just about 6’. He wears his hair a tad on the shaggy side - about medium length for a male with long bangs. Neither light nor dark, it nevertheless is quite smooth and silky. To the touch, it feels much like that of a young child’s. His skin is also soft and unblemished save for the letters “Jr” marking his forehead in bold, black letters. This mark appears regardless of what form Koenma appears in and must therefore be disguised in some other way. It identifies him as the son of Enma Daioh and he is therefore unable to shift it away. Fortunately, with the current fashion in Allupato, disguise is quite easy as he can simply wear a band of some sort around his forehead without raising any suspicion. Although actually over 700 years old, Koenma appears as a young man of college age, perhaps 18 or so.

Koenma will on occasion appear as male child of about four possessing the same features but he typically only uses this appearance around friends (aka minions) or when he wants something he thinks a child is more likely to get. As a child, his eyes appear large and gleaming with innocence… until he is angered or annoyed.

Koenma has a taste for snazzy clothes and will occasionally dress up in rather stylish suits. His everyday attire however consists of a pair of khaki-style pants, black shoes, and a long-sleeved white shirt with a short-sleeved or sleeveless blue tunic worn over it and tied with a red sash. He tops this off with a red cape and of course a band over his forehead marking. Variations to this apparel include a white cape instead of a red one, or a long scarf instead of the cape. In child form he forgoes the cape entirely as he’d most likely trip over it as a toddler and simply wears a long-sleeved blue tunic.

Personality: Koenma can be quite bossy and hates being made fun of. He rarely makes requests, preferring to issue orders. He doesn’t ask, he informs. He has a quick temper and when it’s aroused he resorts to yelling and issuing threats. He’s not a fighter and will therefore not attack physically but he may throw a few things about.

Even his friends have a hard time getting a fix on Koenma’s true nature. Being a prince, he has a rather imperious manner. At times he can be quite childlike, including an odd habit of chewing on things when distracted or thoughtful. Other times he can be quite serious and mature. Intelligent and from a race that’s so long-lived as to be nigh-immortal, Koenma is inclined to make decision with an eye for the long-term. Those who don’t know him as well would call him a coward but he’s a pragmatist, believing that discretion is indeed the better part of valor. Koenma’s selfish about the small things - having his food cooked just right, getting the last piece of cake, making someone else do his dishes, laundry, and take out the trash. After all, why fight when you have people to do that for you? He likes to indulge himself.

Koenma does not get along well with his father. Despite being Enma’s only child, there doesn’t appear to be any real affection between the two of them. Rather, he has the attitude of a child who’s been indulged and then neglected and he seems to defer to his father more out of fear than respect.

When push comes to shove however, Koenma’s nobility does shine out. He takes his responsibilities seriously and has defended his friends to the point of defying his father. He will not back down from a confrontation he deems truly important.

Abilities/Weaponry: Koenma possesses the ability to revive the dead under certain circumstances by re-uniting the soul with the body. In order to do this, the person must be recently deceased with their body still intact and undecayed. Their soul cannot have been sentenced yet. He cannot heal the living or negate a pact made between a human and a demon. He cannot bring a vampire back to life, although one imagines that considering Koenma’s nature, his blood would be quite intoxicating to such a creature.

Koenma’s element is spirit and he can use his reiki (spirit energy) to create a unique sort of barrier. Koenma’s barrier is quite powerful and capable of blocking spiritual and magical attacks, flying debris, and projectiles. It’s a spherical barrier but is limited in size (about that of an average living room).

As a kami, he is particularly resistant to any mental attacks and cannot be transformed into another form of supernatural creature. He heals faster than a human but not as rapidly other supernatural beings due to his being exiled in the human world.

Weaknesses: Koenma’s powers are primarily defensive and his hand-to-hand combat skills are non-existent. He’s a paper-pusher, not a fighter. Again, although he can occasionally bring the recently dead back to life, he does not possess actual healing powers. In other words, he can help you more if your neck was snapped than if you broke a leg.

He’s a new resident to Allupato, so he’s not knowledgeable about the ins-and-outs of the city. His mark is another weakness as he is not able to hide it by any supernatural means and is therefore forced to cover it in other ways when in public.

Koenma’s protective barrier is not an automatic shield; Koenma must anticipate the attack (or debris) and consciously erect it. This means that he can be caught by surprise (either by speed, trickery, or distraction), and he cannot erect it if sleeping or unconscious. The barrier can be broken by a powerful, sustained magical or spiritual attack, although doing so would also drain the opponent of magic/spirit energy. However, this would allow someone to break through and attack physically; Koenma is just as vulnerable to physical attacks as an ordinary human being.

History: Son of King Enma (aka King Yama). Enma is the primary kami of death/afterlife and is in charge of both sentencing the soul of those who have died as well as maintaining the paths (and barriers) between the worlds. Enma himself is unconcerned with the human world but it fascinates his son.

One of Enma’s duties is supposed to be limiting the number of demons who escape to the human world. This has been relegated to his son. Although Koenma has never hunted demons personally, throughout the ages he has recruited gifted humans as demon hunters. Typically, Koenma would investigate into the suspected demons themselves and then dispatch a hunter to carry out the physical work.

About a year ago, Koenma revived a boy named Urameshi Yusuke. Yusuke had died saving a small child from a being hit by a car, despite all appearances that he himself was a useless punk. This contradictory action intrigued Koenma enough to make a deal with Yusuke. If the human would help him hunt down some rogue demons, Koenma would bring him back to life. Yusuke took to this like a fish to water, until he met a human magic user turned bad named Sensui - - a man he couldn’t defeat. As it turned out, Sensui had actually been a former recruit of Koenma’s several decades back. However Sensui turned out to be mentally unstable. When confronted with humanity’s own capacity for evil, he went insane and turned against humankind. Koenma blames himself for this as he was the one who recruited Sensui and then sent him on that mission.

In order to gain the power he needed to defeat Sensui, Yusuke chose to become a demon himself. Because of this, King Enma ordered Yusuke’s death. Already overwhelmed with guilt over Sensui and now feeling responsible for Yusuke’s transformation, Koenma stood up to his father, challenging him as being a big fat hypocrite (and a jerk). Needless to say, their talk didn’t go well.

Koenma has always lived in his father’s shadow - often quite literally in fact as King Enma is a very large being. Their element is spirit - life and death - just as other kami might have fire or water and so on. Technically, Koenma is the crown prince of the afterlife but considering the fact that King Enma is more or less immortal, that doesn’t mean much. Under normal circumstances, he would have a certain degree of authority over other beings from the spirit world but this has changed because of their fight. The argument led Koenma to choose self-exile rather than go along with his father’s decision. King Enma is quite angry with his son but hasn’t yet chosen a punishment, deciding to let him sulk in exile for a while. In other words, he’s been kicked out of the house and grounded for the time being… and the time being could be a very long time indeed!

When Koenma left his home with no where to go, he followed the advice of one of his servants and showed up on Yusuke’s doorstep in Allupato, informing the demon that he was now his new roommate. As for the demons and other supernatural beings running around the city, well, that’s no longer any of his business.
