Cast of characters:
Me - Your Adult Services Reference Librarian Extraordinaire
ALB - Adorable Little Boy, 7 years old but talks like he's 47
Me: Can I help you?
ALB:
Me: OK, let's go find them.
*We walk over there*
Me: The atlases are right here. Do you want to look at a specific place?
ALB: Actually, I'm specifically looking for non-reference Oregon atlases.
Me: All right, our Oregon section is right here. *I pull out an atlas* This one looks like it has lots of good information.
ALB: Thank you!
ALB returns to the desk: Excuse me. I saw this (he heaves up an Atlas of World History) in the Oregon section and I don't think it belongs there.
Me: You're right, it doesn't. I'll put it where it belongs.
*ALB heaves out another atlas* I own this one at home.
*I shelve the book and go back to the desk, leaving him sitting in front of our atlas shelves happily looking at them.*
ALB: Thank you...
He comes back to the desk, with three atlases.
ALB: Excuse me. Are these reference books?
Me: Yes, they are. (thinking, "Shoot. He said non-reference and I didn't take him seriously.")
ALB: Well, actually, I was looking for books I could check out. And also, these two atlases are not Oregon atlases. One is United States and one is Washington.
Me: OK, I can take you to where the atlases you can check out are.
*We walk to the shelves, where I discover that the travel & geography books have been moved.
Me: Oops, they've moved them to another section. I'll take you there.
ALB: Is this normal? Do books move around a lot here?
Me: Sometimes. We're running out of room for all of our books so sometimes we move things around so we can get more room.
ALB: I see.
Me: OK, sir. Here is an Oregon atlas for you that you can check out.
ALB: Oh, there's some world atlases too! I think I'm into world atlases now.
Me: Well, here's a great one that was published very recently, so all the countries will be right.
ALB: Thank you so much!!!
Also, in other news, my boss at CMCPL loves me. "I just know my Friday nights are perfectly taken care of. Whenever I walk by the desk, you are doing so wonderfully. You have such a rapport with the patrons."
