Welcome to rp_anontalk, everybody!

Anonymous commenting is on.

IP logging is off.

Recaptcha is "off," according to my settings, but I'm pretty sure it's an LJ thing that it'll come on anyway once we hit five thousand comments.

Enjoy!

Anon has something of a dilemma.... how does one deal with elitists in one's fandom when role-playing?

I've had a single-fandom RP recommended to me a few days ago, but the trouble is that the maintainers are what can be called 'purists' and only accept characters from the first series and not the sequels. Normally, this wouldn't bother me all that much (it's their sandbox and they make the rules) but the trouble is that the rules also include a healthy dose of bashing directed towards the sequels.

After three years in this particular fandom, I've just about reached my overall limit in regards to what I'll accept -- and this goes straight over that line. I've made their stance known, so that other potential players don't get the nasty surprise that I got. Still, the trouble is that I've become so bitterly tired of bashing in general within this community and would like to see it gone altogether.... but that's only wishful thinking, of course

I haven't really had this happen to me, mostly because I run away like a chicken from it, but I guess all you can do is just shake your head and walk away. If they don't, then they should make it known that they don't accept characters from the sequels. If they do, then I guess you know what place to avoid.

Like you said, since it's their sandbox and they make the rules, just try to chill out about it. Hopefully you can find another place, or start your own, where everyone can be accepted.

Yes, this is the wisest possible decision. What generally pushes my 'pissed-off' button is simply how pervasive their kind of attitude is within this fandom in general -- to the point where I make certain to avoid it whenever I can (a small group of people has managed to somewhat drag me out of my hole, but only because they're decent and civilized in their opinions and attitudes).

I suppose that I would have been far less bothered by the whole thing stated above if the moderators had said something along the lines of 'we allow only the original here. We understand that some may enjoy the sequels as well, but those simply aren't our cup of tea and thus we wish to keep only the spirit of the original series.' Still exclusionary, yes, but at least it showed a certain amount of respect for the opinions of others. But no -- these fellows are the kinds that would like the sequels written out of continuity entirely and view them only as 'fan-fiction ( ... )

Just look at the godliness that was FF7 and the shit that was everything that came after FF7 and you'll see why people get kind of "D:" about shit like that.

I don't want shit AC/DoC/whatever characters shitting up FF7 roleplay.

Daisychain sucks and I'm glad it's closing.

Thoughts?

Eh. Different strokes for different folks.

Does it make a difference to you that it's closing because it's the natural progression of the game or do you just care that it's closing, period?

I used to stalk DC, actually. How is it gonna close? The monster goes away/dies? I'm kinda curious.

DC player here; no one's sure yet. We have three monsters on the rampage; whatever it is, it's going to be big.

I'm having fun. :/

Just ignore the suck and the stupid and...okay, it's hard, but there is fun!

It's hard because so much of it sucks. There are maybe five good players on there. Out of dozens.

All the stupid bandwagon-hoppers. The Harry Potter, the Star Trek, the Torchwood.

(I think there are about five players on there in general. Well, no, I lie. I know five. Do you know a slightly different five, 'cos if not, there are five. ...And then a couple I don't talk to, cough cough Kylie cough.)

The bandwagons are bad. I'm less annoyed by the casts-- especially if they're long-lasting, like the Star Trek ones, and non-invasive which the canon characters are, even if some of the OCs are...irritating.

But the bandwagons like O HAY GUYS I'M BLIIIIND and I did not do any RESEAAAARRCH piss me off. Come up with more original concepts, people.

So, anons.

Great big war plots and the running thereof.

Advice, ideas, cautionary tales on how to Do It Right?

Let characters have the ability to have a say in the plot. Be flexible. Someone might do something that changes the plot, and while it's okay to have big overarching plot lines, never forget that what people do can be really useful.

Oh, God. Okay.

Figure out what kind of detail you want in fight scenes. If Player A wants to go one-two-three fast as can be and Player B wants to dwell lovingly over every bit of equipment brought to the fight scene you're going to have two pissed off players.

Try to get your war plotted out first. Remember that unlike real war you can have an outline. How many major conflicts do you want? What major plot points should each of those conflicts have? Conflict for conflict's sake is going to drive people insane.

Don't, do not, never ever, reuse the war. I knew a guy who basically forced people through the exact same war plot three times before everyone told him to give it up. Once a year for three years, same war, same reason for the war, tried to get the same people involved, it was horrible ( ... )

This is really handy anon, thanks! I'll keep it in mind for the next big fight (this one went really well, btw).

WANK WANK WANK and then just "drop" a link to it in someone's journal, IM, or something. Make it like it's a "biiiiiig secret" that this wank happened and soon everyone will know about it.

...not that I've done that or anything.
