I stumbled across this essay (and the community) by accident yesterday. I recently fell for Orlijah as my new Lotrips reading OTP so I loved coming upon this.

I heartily agree with what you said about the appeal of the pairing. Of course they are both pretty, but they are interesting on top of that which makes them intriguing to write and read about.

Thank you for this essay, lotr_squee, and your own Orlijah stories. I got a lot of joy out of all three things already.

Thank you. I'm glad you liked the essay. I found it interesting to try and put into non-fictional words what it was I vibed on most about this pairing.

There are some really great Orlijah stories out there too. I don't know how it compares to other pairings, because I really don't read much of anything else in lotrips, but the only real complaint I have is that there isn't enough of it :)

What a lovely essay. I always have a hard time finding the words for why I love reading Orlijah so much, and I usually jokingly fall back on the prettiness for my reasoning. Now I can just point people over here because you summed up the personality dynamics which I find so appealing quite beautifully.

(And now I will always think of Elijah as an "embodied anime character", lord help me.)

Thank you! It's always been the character dynamics that have appealed to me most too, so it really surprised me when so many people would assume I was only interested in the pretty.

I don't usually read these types of things. I'll start to, and get bored and wander off to read fic.

But this was like you were pulling things out of my brain that I wasn't aware of. Because THIS is why I love Orlijah. It's not my OTP (not even my secret OTP), but I love the pairing. And I wasn't aware of what it really was that I loved the best. And it really is the contradictions in their personalities.

Thanks for putting into words things I couldn't have ever written myself. I feel relieved in a strange sort of way.

Thank you for the lovely comment. I'm so glad to hear that what I wrote struck a chord with you. I'm always a little boggled when people just assume the only interesting thing about these two are their looks.

I'm glad you enjoyed the essay. It was interesting actually articulating what it is I like about them as a pairing. Elijah is interesting because of his layers. It's the thing that first grabbed me and made me start writing (and it's why nearly everything I've written is from his POV).

You know, frankly, what's wrong with pretty??? Why does it HAVE to be more than that? Because I think they're pretty inside too, and that's what keeps me here!

There's nothing wrong with pretty, of course. Pretty is fine. I just like other stuff more, and as I was trying to describe what it is that I like about the pairing, that's what I focused on. Each to their own though. That's the great thing about slash, isn't it? There's something for everyone.

Exactly. I was being facetious earlier, but I think that sometimes we get a bit too analytical for our own good. Why take this whole thing apart and make it into more than it needs to be? Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and sometimes slash is just slash, if you know what I mean. I love their personalities too -- don't get me wrong -- and I enjoy their dynamic as a pairing but with these two, you just can't disregard the pretty.

Darn it! I must have taken my sarcasm glasses off. :)

I guess I'm just analysis girl at heart. For me, it makes everything better. And after a while the pretty bores me, so it's the other stuff I really get into. You're right though, the pretty is a part of the attraction with those two. I cannot be denied!
