I enjoy poetry, but I've been reading through the New Yorker and some random livejournals from the recent posts on the livejournal homepage. I find that a lot of people don't seem to get poetry, just thinking that you can achieve poetry by writing about emotional topics in prose and splitting it up with line breaks ( Read more... )

I think conservativism stems from religion. It's not a lack of proper education, it's those extra classes on sunday mornings. They take religious texts as set in stone, no alternatives, which leads to taking other things that way, like the institution of marriage. I had an interesting conversation the other night with a Mercy girl who at first seemed to be anti gay marriage, but then said that the Bible objected to two people living together if not married, but she didn't seem to have a problem with two married men living together. She said that could never change. She takes Catholicism very seriously. Which is also why Bush is considered firm as a rock; he isn't capable of thinking things over after they have already been decided ( ... )
