Once you are convinced that Linux is better and you start using Linux, it is easy to decide which distro suits best your needs , download and install it.
In fact I worked a lot of time with Red Hat and Fedora and now I am evaluating Debian Sarge (If I am not wrong Ubuntu is Debian - based ? ) . It could be that I will move to Debian. I know some who tried Ubuntu ; In what do you think Ubuntu is better?
I got onto Ubuntu because friends tried it. I actually prefer FreeBSD ;-) but it didn't work very well on laptops we had here.
Ubuntu seems to see its competition as the Mac, not Windows (which I think Linux has beaten in usability). They've worked very hard to make things Just Work. I like the Debian-based framework but with up-to-date applications.
It does very much like you to do things its way - "We KNOW where you're going today" - but they say this is to minimise user confusion, and I can see their point. Doing things your own way is not too difficult if you know what you want.
I have a page on the subject. Mostly about the Compaq Evo N410c in particular, though with rambling about Ubuntu in general.
