Themes Take Two (The Short List)

Feb 08, 2016 10:47

So, we got them down from 14 to a much more manageable seven.  Yay us!  Now let's discuss them, keeping in mind that we need to pick Team Designations as well, and we'll decide by Feb 14th.  Does that work?

1. In Sickness and in Health: I pitched this two years back, too late for it to be considered. Since then, I have become even more attached ( Read more... )

I'll admit that this one is possibly my very favorite. I love it for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that it is so basic (in a good way). Virtually every story has a setting, and much art has background. Place shapes who we are, our thoughts and our actions, the way we see the world. they can make us feel secure, invigorated, curious, etc.

I believe that it would lead to some very well-crafted works in terms of setting, etc. And, mind you, that location does not have to be a city/country it could also a be chair, a tree, a space ship, etc. In fact, this one works perfectly for both canon and AU and for nearly any genre. Honestly, it doesn't feel like it would skew too much any direction for me. It also feels like it could potentially work well for art, albeit maybe skewed a little bit toward backgrounds, etc.

That said, luminousgloom mentioned that the actual name reminded them of some show on Brit TV, so we might want to add a tagline kind of thing.
Wherever you go, there you are?
Be Here Now?
Someplace, ( ... )

Also in my top three, though my one reservation is that it could be seen as being too close to the 'journeys' theme from a few years ago.

Yeah, I've wondered about that, too, but hopefully it is the sort of thing that we can "fix" with prompts, verbiage, explanation, emphasis, etc. I'm thinking about the idea of "a room of one's own" and home being a place. Or of a favorite spot in a forest or comfy chair by the fire. "Journeys" was also about the non-physical aspects, the journey of life, etc. Location would be more about setting and where one is at each individual moment. It could also be location in time as well as in space. (Or maybe I've been watching too much Dr Who. LOL).

Anyway, I just wanted to say that I agree with your reservation, and think that there is a way we could work around it.

This is another one that I really adore. Again, the actual name/tagline might need a little tweaking:
It's All in the Mind?
It's All in Your Head?
The Mind: A Beautiful Servant, A Dangerous Master?
The Mind: Dreams, Thoughts, Psychology and Pure Imagination?
Anyway, I am really taken with how universal this is. Thinking, dreaming, etc. are components of many a story, as is the "opposite" (which isn't really opposite at all): feelings and emotions. That could make for some fun interplay, too. I also love how this theme can lend itself to both light and dark stories, to thinks like mental health and imagination as well as logic and intelligence.

My only concern is that artists (or at least a certain artist), could feel that it was too story-oriented and not very artists friendly. Granted, artists use their minds to create, but I am afraid that some people might feel that this is a hard theme to draw.

Any thoughts on team designations for this one?

"The Mind's Eye"
"State of Mind"
"I Got My Mind Set on You"
"If You Could Read My Mind"

Really like "State of Mind", or even "The Mind's Eye" (just my opinion in case, you know, this theme wins out :D )
