There's also the 17-85 IS you used at beachcon. It's alf the price of the 2.8 hardware, pretty good image quality, and I find I do a fair amount of shooting at the long end of the range so I appreciate that 55-85mm area that I'd lose with the 17-55mm 2.8.

The only thing I don't like about it is the speed -- but I'm not sure I dislike that enough to give up the long end.

I guess best of both worlds would be to have both. I'd use the 17-85mm for shooting during the day and the 17-55mm for shooting at night.

I'd actually prefer to have a fast lens with less zoom, especially since I rarely ever used the long end of my 28-70.

I just justified buying a new computer, and then talked myself into spending more on a better one, so I give you permission to buy the camera. That's how this works, right?

Wait, $950 for a lens? You need a less 'spensive hobby.
