Which Circle of Hell?

Feb 19, 2008 00:42

Tes' journal called my attention to this delightful quiz. Naturally, I became curious to know just which circle in Dante's Inferno I ought to end up in, a question I actually didn't think too much about while reading it. Since I don't believe in Hell and all.

So I'm not at all surprised to find out that I'll be joining Pope Anastasius and the ( Read more... )

Ah, so I take it you're one who likes to indulge herself then, anony_mouse? Then you'll be lashed by the cold and tormenting rain of the Third Circle, and chased by the dog Cerberus! Perhaps you can be gluttonous Ciacco, the Florentine politician who for his damning sin of self indulgence, languishes in the torrent:

Voi cittadini mi chiamaste Ciacco:
per la dannosa colpa de la gola,
come tu vedi, a la pioggia mi fiacco

Oh no, don't give up on Faust! Both parts are great.... Goethe's circus of devilish comedy, moving tragedy and sublime, exalted sentimentality simply can't be compared to anything else!

..ok, so....your lust is higher than mine........my gluttony is higher than yours........I say we get together, I watch you have sex, while I eat.......

Oooh, lustful! I was rather tickled by the fact that Tes got Lustful herself, I thought she could be Francesca da Rimini, but led astray by the sinful example of her own book. Sounds like a plan, we could create our own little Garden of Earthly Delights down there.

You must be a mind reader.... but no, the answer is, it's not inspired by Carmina Burana.

Which was as I expected. I got a high Level 7 rating, however, which was a considerable surprise to me. Have you read Inferno by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle? It's an excellent tour through the Dantean circles of Hell for those who can't manage to chew through Dante. (Although they come down pretty hard on Kurt Vonnegut!)

What a strange coincidence. That's three consecutive gluttons who have stopped by my journal to comment on this. Well, you can't all be Ciacco! So am I a heretic who just happens to attract gluttons?

One thing I would love to see is an English translation of the Bosco/Reggio commentary and notes to La Divina Commedia. Many modern Italians regard it as their definitive (and certainly their most oft-referenced) guide to Dante's masterpiece, and it would be wonderful to peer inside, even though there are quite a number of good English language commentaries as well.
