Somewhere in the city, and easily locatable, Martin is working with Rebman workers as they clear an area of some rubble and get it prepared for rebuilding. There's a cart where material is being placed. Martin is in unformal wear, simply working with the people. Some of the minor noblemen sons and daughters have taken his lead and are working as well. Some are not yet doing so, it's beneath them!
Enid is known in Rebma, certainly, but with her position in the Trade Ministry she's not seen there very often. It doesn't take much searching to find the work sites, and when she spies Martin assisting with the labor she seems more than a bit surprised. "Baron Icedeep? Yes, it -is- you. I've not seen you in quite a while, now."
Were he in Amber, he'd certainly be working up quite a sweat. Since they are in Rebma; it's just a bit of a glow. He drops a mishappen stone into the pile of refuse in a cart and rubs his hands of the debris while he smiles brightly at Enid. "Hi!" he responds enthusiastically. "Yeah, it's been a long time, Enid, right?" He would hold out a hand but they're fairly grimy at the moment.
Enid laughs softly, and despite her pearls and his grime, she glides up to offer her own hand. "Yes, it's Enid, Martin." she replies. "I wanted to take a look at the damage and the rebuilding efforts. There's a stonecrafter from Amber's House Gozer who's offered his assistance. I agreed to show him around."
"Gozer...gozer" Martin takes a gourd that's dangling off the cart and takes a healthy swallow of whatever is in it. It looks ... pink. "Ah, righto. I've heard of them." he takes her hand as she offers it and gives it a friendly shake and squeeze. "We could use all the help we can get. Need to strengthen and rebuild and I think we are totally going to come out of this stronger if we all pull together."
Enid's palms are uncalloused and smooth, her grip firm and business-like. "The offer comes from none other than Baron Daede himself, a stonecrafter of no mean skill. His only condition, other than payment for his work, is to be permitted to place an obelisk marking his contribution to the city."
"An obelisk. That I'll have to get clearance from Her Majesty for. Depending on the size, i don't think it'll be that big of a problem." Martin gives a slight shrug of his shoulders and stoppers the gourde. "Let me take the news to her Majesty, I'll be having dinner with her later tonight and I will let you know. How have you been?" He wonders.
Enid nods slowly. "I've already spoken to Llewella and Her Eminence about it." She even manages the latter without rolling her eyes. "Daede has also offered to rebuild one structure completely, at his own cost." Tilting her head a little, she smiles at the question. "I've been well, thank you. A bit busy, but that has calmed somewhat now. I must say, Martin, that I'm pleased to see you here."
Martin's smile is genuine in return, "Excellent, I will get her signed approval then." He seems blithely confident of that and continues on just as blithely. "Of course I would be. I would have been here before, but I was trapped in Shadow. My cousin Yvonne rescued me." he explains with a sigh as he treads water in place. Swimming is as natural as breathing to him. "I was caught in a loop, Deep shadow is a tricky place and sometimes very dangerous."
Enid smiles at that, nodding slowly in understanding. "I would expect that it is. I use mirror travel, myself. And while it is not without certain risks, it is an altogether convenient and easy mode of transit."
"Well, it's the shadows there themselves that can be highly unpredictable and unless you adapt to it you can quickly get consumed." Martin isn't the best at explaining the universe, but well, he tries. "Er, think of it as like walking into a realm inhabited only by fire elementals. If you want to live there, you have to have to learn the language. In order to get anything done in this particular world, I had to become a part of it. In the course of becoming a part of it, I got trapped."
Enid's brows scrunch at the explanation, but after he finishes she nods slowly. "A paradox, of course. Yes, I see that now. And your cousin Yvonne found you and brought you out? It is truly good to have relatives who are willing to aid you in need."
"It was an interesting world, I have to go back there unfortunately at some point to complete the mission and return what I took with me when I left." Martin doesn't look enthusiastic about this and kind of has a 'what can you do' expression. "I made a promise." he explains, "Can't let them down. But, I also have a commitment to Rebma, so. Priorities and such. Yes, Yvonne is Princess Fiona's granddaughter, she and I have been friends forever."
Enid nods slowly to that, considering quietly for a moment. "Really? I should like to meet her sometime. Are you an initiate in Mirror Magic? It is more direct than your... shadowshifting, if I understand correctly. And you may circumvent the paradox which held you. Assuming there are appropriate mirrors, of course."
Martin says, "I am" he chuckles, "That's just the thing, you can't look in a mirror in this world, or a trump card. It's peculiar that way. Deep shadow cannot be explained, you have to experience it. It's a bit like being on a permanent drug trip." A Remban supervisor comes up to Martin to get his opinion on something and he works with that for a minute before turning his attention back to Enid. "That's why you have to be really careful when you go down the rabbit hole."
Enid squints and frowns a little at that. Clasping her hands behind her, she waits for the consultation and her expression clears by then. "Very interesting indeed." she replies. "I am fortunate that my talents are of a simpler variety, then." And yet there's something about her smile that belies that simple statement.
Martin laughs softly, "Sometimes I wish mine were a lot simpler." The consultation is brief and off the construction supervisor goes content that the Baron is right even though he's got funny hair. "The point is, anyway, the rabbit hole is very long and has a hell of a lot of twists and turns. Be very careful while in it, and don't forget your users guide to the universe." He gestures to the project underway, changing the subject delicately, "We're doing pretty well here but all this excess material, I hate to throw it away. do you know if that Gozer guy can make use of it?"
Enid looks around at the debris, and she nods definitively. "I am quite certain that he can. Daede is skilled, and can shape stone with his bare hands. He's been doing it so long that such things are second nature to him, I believe." She smiles a little, then, and adds. "He is quite a dear, and calls me 'young lady'."
"Excellent!" If there were theme songs in Amber, the sound of an electric guitar would be playing when Martin responds with that enthusiastic exclamation. "I'll save it then and put it in a warehouse for when we can get him and his peopl down here." That seems to make the Baron very pleased, "Why make waste when you can recycle, yeh know? And yeh are a nice young lady." A wink is followed by a somewhat cheeky grin.
Enid tosses her head and laughs at the latter, for a moment looking every bit like she would swat him for the boldness. "From you, I know it is flattery. I'm old enough to be your grandmother several times, you know." she replies. "From Daede, it is just a part of his natural charm."
Martin chuckles , taking it all in stride. He's his father's son but not quite -as- bad. He glances over towards the construction. "I'd better get back to work so we at least get things started and I can give her Majesty a promising report later. Please let Baron Gozer know that Baron Icedeep will have the answer soon. Is there anything you all need at the embassy?"
Enid nods to him, almost formally. "As you have Her Majesty's ear, I am certain that garnering her support will not be an issue. I will contact Baron Gozer directly, as well." She smiles at his parting question, then replies simply. "Only the occasional company for tea. Good day to you, Martin."
Martin looks pleased with that, bids her good day as well and back to work he swims.
