She was a woman who could combat the down-in-the-dumps mentality with humor and empathy, that's for sure. Have you read her books or seen her one-woman show? The world lost a great woman today.

I am very glad to hear that you're undergoing treatment for depression. C has suffered from it for many years, and I have acquired some sense of how intractible it can be; I wouldn't wish it on anyone. But I've also seen that things can be done to help with it, and I hope they will be successful for you. Of course no one but you can judge the cost of the struggle, but I hope you find it bearable.

As a child my siblings and I quoted Princess Leia's snarkiest lines to each other. It didn't occur to us to analyze her role as a female character in a sci-fi movie. She was just cool.

I remember learning that Carrie Fisher had personal struggles with drug and alcohol abuse. In my naiveté I found this a contradiction with the on-screen image of the cool and fearless princess.

Only as an adult did I realize her strength was in her weakness, did I understand how unique was her hard-won self knowledge and did I learn to admire her ability to give us her vulnerability without compromising herself.
