Oh, gosh, so sorry to hear that. I too find it hard when long-term (20+ years) couples separate or divorce though I ain't judging because I'm not married so I don't know how tough that can be. My parents just celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary yesterday and even though they have their very, very bad moments, I usually tell them to hang on. And they do want to stay together so they try.
But I can imagine it's hard dealing with an illness or condition as serious as dementia. I hope they can work something out--even if they don't get back together--where they can be content with their decision and life.
My parents are so bonded to each other, they have been married for nearly 60 years and it's hard for me to imagine one without the other, but the dementia has robbed my mother of most of her memories, so much so that she doesn't always recognize my Dad and she doesn't even know that she's married. She has no idea that she has children or grand children, it really is a terrible disease. She has no idea how old she is. Sometimes she thinks that she is a young girl, about 6 years old. It's really strange.
My Dad has done an amazing job with her, but it's too much for him. They aren't divorcing it is more like a death. My Dad still loves my Mom and wants what's best for her, but he needs to look after himself as well. He visits her every day. It's just a difficult situation!
Thanks for your kind words! BTW I've been married more than 20 years, so to me that's not that long. LOL!
