My brother destroyed (that is, scratched to the point of unplayability) the first disc of my copy of New Order's Substance.

Question: Do I accept his offer of downloading the songs illegally and burning them to a CD, or do I hold my position and maintain that he purchase the songs to replace what he destroyed?

I am typically very aware of lame attempts to justify downloading music, but I would call it acceptable in this case. When he paid $10-15 for the CD, what he was buying were the songs; not the medium it was printed on. So he still owns the rights to listen to that music.

I would compare this to using a serial key generator for software you own when you lose your original. You still have the songs on that cd, but you can no longer access them.

I would also highly recommend to your brother that he use a "Computer" to put music on.

I think the point is that it was his CD, not his brother's. Make him pay. >:(

Moog is right - it's MY cd that was damaged. In this case, now that I've calmed down, I do see the logic in downloading the music. However, I still want him to PAY, somehow. Not financially, perhaps.
