The first episode of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is pretty amazing. That's a type of comedy that I don't normally see in anime.

i think it kind of degrades to 'generic anime'

Are you serious? It was little more than a rapid stream of random "absurd" shit thrown together that relies almost entirely on its absurdity to be funny (except it's not) in addition to its underlying mocking of anime (which still isn't that funny).

I'm not particularly up on comedy anime (largely because every example of it I've seen is distinctly unfunny, probably due to culture differences) but it seems to follow about the same formula as many other anime for trying to be funny: Random, rapid, shit.

Unless you're referring to the first "real" episode. Which wasn't particularly amazing but I can at least see enjoying it a little.
