Is it a sin to lie?

Is it a sin to lie? The Ten Commandments say "Thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor," and people love to argue that means 'do not lie.' But does it? Sometimes it does seem unavoidable, but maybe that's part of our weakness as humans to see a better way than lying. Trust me, I lie quite a bit, and while the lie isn't always big or impactful, it's a lie nonetheless. And adults seem to worry over the most trivial things. Maybe it has something to do with getting older. I don't know. My dad misunderstands me like that quite often. He takes things out of context and switches words around and confuses himself. Bleh.
